PMS 471 C is a Pantone Matching System (PMS) color noted for its visibly reddish-brown appearance within the Pantone PMS collection, commonly used in brand standards and marking applications. It presents as earthy, robust, practical, and clearly defined, with a visually warm feel and substantial presence. The color conveys a sense of reliability and structure, often associated with industry, construction, or organizations seeking a natural, approachable aesthetic.

PMS 471 C appears medium-dark in tone, with an LRV of 16.79, offering modest light reflectance. The color has a warm overall tendency, leaning toward red and brown rather than yellow or orange. It displays strong saturation, with a visibly dense, chromatic character. The undertone is predominantly red-brown, which can be more evident in direct or natural light. The color may shift slightly in appearance depending on gloss level; higher-gloss finishes can amplify its depth and saturation, while matte or flat sheens will mute the visual impact and emphasize the earthy quality.

PMS 471 C works well where a distinctive, earthy red-brown is required for brand consistency across fabricated displays, signage, or retail fixtures. For best results, evaluate appearance under intended lighting conditions, as the color may appear deeper or less saturated in low-light environments. Highly saturated colors like PMS 471 C may require adequate surface preparation and multiple coats to achieve uniform coverage, particularly in low-hide bases or over contrasting substrates. Relative to other similar hues, PMS 471 C is recognizable for its balance of warmth and visual weight without veering into more orange or brick-toned territory.

Similar colors:
PMS 470 C – Slightly darker and less saturated, with a more muted brown quality.

PMS 472 C – Noticeably lighter and less chromatic, with a softer, more peach-like appearance.

PMS 167 C – Deeper and more strongly red, presenting less of the earthy, brown undertone.

PMS 175 C – Darker overall with a cooler, more muted brown-red appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 471 C

What are the best practices for comparing PMS 471 C paint samples during color approval?

When comparing PMS 471 C paint samples for approval, always view them under consistent lighting that matches the intended environment since this can strongly influence the perceived color. Ensure all samples are applied to the same substrate type and finish, as material and sheen differences can cause the color to appear different. Let all painted samples fully dry and cure before making final judgments, since PMS 471 C changes in appearance as coatings set. Following these steps reduces the chance of approving colors that will not appear consistent in their final setting.

What should I know when painting metal or powder-coated surfaces with Pantone PMS 471 C?

Before applying PMS 471 C to metal or powder-coated parts, thoroughly clean and lightly scuff the surface to promote adhesion and even coverage. Existing coatings or glossy finishes can affect how PMS 471 C appears once painted. For highly saturated colors like this, a contrasting or uneven base can cause shift or require extra coats. It is recommended to test a sample first, as the final result may look different depending on the surface and underlying finish.

How does the finish or sheen impact the appearance of PMS 471 C paint in use?

The finish you select for PMS 471 C can significantly change how the color is perceived. Gloss and satin finishes tend to increase apparent depth and saturation, making PMS 471 C look richer and more vivid. Matte finishes mute reflectance and can make the earthy, reddish-brown characteristics stand out while reducing vibrancy. Consider the intended brand effect and lighting when choosing a finish, and if possible, review samples in the field before finalizing the choice.

What product formats are available for Pantone PMS 471 C, and how do I select the right one?

PMS 471 C is available in several product formats suitable for branding and marketing applications. You can order this color as custom spray paint, paint pens, brush-in-cap bottles, and in other paint types as offered. Spray paint provides even coverage for displays and fabricated parts, while paint pens and brush-in-cap bottles are practical for smaller, controlled applications. Choose the format that matches your project scale and the method you plan to use for applying the color.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 471 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
