PMS 472 C, from the Pantone PMS collection, is a light, soft, brownish-orange hue that conveys an understated, natural, and grounded character. Its moderate light reflectance and subdued saturation evoke an earthy, approachable, and functional vibe, making it useful in settings seeking warmth without visual dominance.

PMS 472 C has a light to mid-value appearance; LRV 40.75 provides moderate brightness and good visibility on most surfaces. The color exhibits a warm tendency, leaning toward brown-orange on the hue spectrum. The saturation level is moderate, with chroma that gives clarity without intensity. The undertone is a natural, muted orange-brown, preventing the color from appearing overly vivid or synthetic. The color may appear slightly lighter or flatter in matte finishes and deepen in gloss or semi-gloss.

PMS 472 C works well in environments where a warm, approachable, and slightly earthy effect is desired without excess vibrancy. It reads as a soft, muted orange-brown under most lighting and is less sensitive to major shifts in brightness, though natural and artificial lighting can still influence warmth. Surface prep matters for uniform coverage; uneven substrates may exaggerate the muted pigment quality. Compared to similar colors, it is more subdued and less saturated, minimizing the risk of overwhelming a composition or display.

Similar colors:
PMS 471 C is deeper and richer, resulting in a darker and more saturated appearance.

PMS 474 C is lighter, with a softer and more pastel effect.

PMS 465 C is more neutral in tone, lacking the distinct orange warmth.

PMS 729 C is cooler and paler, reducing the earthy orange impression.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 472 C

Why is Pantone PMS 472 C not recommended for touch-up of existing finishes?

Pantone PMS 472 C is a standardized color reference used to communicate an exact color target. However, it does not specify the sheen, substrate, or application methods present on existing products or coatings. Because of these differences, using PMS 472 C as a touch-up reference may result in visible mismatches in gloss, texture, or appearance. For ongoing projects or repairs, it is safer to source paint matched to your original finish and material rather than relying on the Pantone code alone.

How should I prepare surfaces before applying Pantone PMS 472 C paint?

For best results when applying Pantone PMS 472 C, start by making sure the surface is clean, dry, and free of dust, oil, or grease. Degrease and lightly scuff glossy or slick surfaces to promote adhesion. Patch and sand any uneven areas as needed. Always test a small area with PMS 472 C paint to confirm adhesion and appearance before proceeding with the full project. Proper surface prep helps ensure uniform color and finish.

Are there special coverage considerations when using Pantone PMS 472 C paint?

Pantone PMS 472 C is a light, muted brown-orange and typically provides moderate coverage. Some Pantone colors, especially those that are very bright or saturated, may require multiple coats for full and even coverage, especially over dark or uneven surfaces. To achieve consistent brand results, plan for additional coats if you are working on challenging substrates or if covering a contrasting base color.

What is the typical lead time for ordering paint matched to Pantone PMS 472 C?

Pantone PMS 472 C paint is made to order to ensure color accuracy. Lead times depend on the product type and current production volume but typically range from a few days for common formats to longer for custom or large volume requests. It is best to place orders early, especially for time-sensitive marketing or display projects.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 472 C?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 472 C depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. We do our best to make sure you get your paint on time. Learn more about paint lead times at MyPerfectColor.
Can I use the Pantone PMS 472 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
