PMS 246 C is part of the Pantone PMS (Pantone Matching System) collection, serving as a standardized control color for brand and identity design, display fabrication, and marketing. The color presents as vibrant, assertive, and modern with a distinctly bold chromatic presence. It is best characterized by descriptors such as saturated, high-energy, impactful, and contemporary, with a discernible cool magenta appearance.

PMS 246 C appears as a mid-dark, highly saturated magenta. The color has a cool tendency, skewing toward purple rather than red. PMS 246 C is visually intense, exhibiting high chroma and distinct color purity. It contains noticeable blue undertones, strengthening its coolness and vibrancy. The color's light reflectance value (LRV) is 15.27, making it relatively dark and providing strong contrast in most applications. PMS 246 C is sensitive to changes in lighting and finish, with higher gloss amplifying vibrancy and matte finishes slightly muting its appearance.

PMS 246 C works well in environments and applications where immediate attention or brand recognition is necessary, such as retail displays, branded installations, or event environments. The strong chroma allows it to stand out even against darker backgrounds or under direct lighting. Due to its saturation and pigmentation, uniform coverage may require multiple coats, especially over contrasting surfaces. Lighting can cause subtle shifts—cool lighting enhances its magenta aspects, while warm lighting may mute its vibrancy. Precise surface preparation is important for achieving even color presentation, and gloss or satin finishes will further accentuate its chromatic impact.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 246 C

What are the best practices for comparing PMS 246 C paint samples during color approval?

To accurately compare PMS 246 C paint samples, evaluate all samples under the same lighting conditions, ideally using neutral or daylight-balanced lighting. Use the same substrate and coating finish type for all samples, as differences in gloss and texture can affect the appearance of PMS 246 C. Ensure that all coatings are fully dry or cured before making any approval decisions, since PMS 246 C can shift slightly as it dries. Aligning these variables minimizes variables and helps ensure your decision reflects the final, installed result.

What should I consider when applying PMS 246 C to metal or powder-coated parts?

When using PMS 246 C on metal or powder-coated substrates, clean and scuff the surface thoroughly to improve paint adhesion. Existing coatings and varying gloss levels can cause PMS 246 C to appear differently than expected. For best results, test PMS 246 C on a sample part using the same preparation and finish as your production components before committing to the full application. This helps evaluate color consistency, vibrancy, and any gloss-related shifts under your specific lighting.

How do I make sure I am ordering the correct color when specifying PMS 246 C?

To ensure you order the right color, always use the full Pantone PMS code, such as 'PMS 246 C', including any suffix like 'C' for coated. The code is the precise identifier for your project. Avoid ordering by name alone, since some Pantone names are similar or have variants. If your brand standard specifies a certain series or finish, include those details with your order for PMS 246 C.

How much surface area does one spray can of PMS 246 C typically cover?

One standard spray can of PMS 246 C typically covers about 20 to 25 square feet per coat on a smooth, primed surface. Because PMS 246 C is a highly saturated magenta, it may require multiple coats for full coverage and uniform appearance, especially over contrasting backgrounds. Actual coverage will vary based on application method, surface texture, the number of coats, and color intensity requirements. For brand-critical projects, it is best to order extra to allow for sampling and touchups during installation.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 246 C?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 246 C depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. Can I use the Pantone PMS 246 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

MyPerfectColor custom spray paint enables you to conveniently achieve a professional spray-smooth finish in any color in any sheen. How do I convert PMS 246 C to a different color from another paint company?

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 246 C in paint, we don't provide any crossover information.
