PMS 186 C is a Pantone Matching System (PMS) color from the Pantone PMS collection. This color is direct, vivid, and assertive—widely used where strong brand presence is required. It presents as energetic, unmistakable, and modern. The color vibe supports specifications where clarity, attention, and visual consistency are essential.

PMS 186 C appears as a strong, saturated red with a slight lean toward warm tones. The light reflectance value (LRV) is 14.54, indicating a distinctly dark color that absorbs most ambient light. The color exhibits high chroma, translating to vividness and intensity when applied. The undertone is warm, with a primary red hue and only a minimal orange influence. PMS 186 C is sensitive to surface finish, with gloss levels accentuating its vibrancy while matte finishes may reduce saturation. The color can appear deeper or slightly duller under low lighting or when applied over non-white substrates.

PMS 186 C is often used in contexts requiring immediate visual impact and strong color identity, such as logo backgrounds and branded retail displays. The color is specified for flag elements and sports identity signage where a bold red must be consistent and easily identified under various lighting conditions.

PMS 186 C is operationally effective for marketing activations, displays, and exhibit components demanding striking visual presence. When using this color, ensure adequate surface preparation and use a compatible white base coat to achieve full saturation and uniform coverage, as dark, saturated reds like PMS 186 C may require additional coats for opacity. The color’s final appearance varies notably with surface gloss and ambient lighting, so review samples under project conditions. Compared with similar reds, PMS 186 C tends to be less blue and maintains warm vibrancy without drifting toward orange.

Similar colors:

  • PMS 200 C: Slightly darker and cooler, with a deeper, less vibrant character.
  • PMS 485 C: More chromatic and vivid, with a hint of additional orange making it appear brighter and warmer.
  • PMS 187 C: Deeper and more subdued, leaning toward a muted, burgundy direction.
  • PMS 1795 C: Slightly more orange-influenced, presenting as a warmer variant.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 186 C

What should I consider when using PMS 186 C for a retail pop-up or branded environment?

When specifying PMS 186 C for a retail pop-up or brand environment, plan for durability and visual consistency. This color is highly saturated, which can mean lower hide and the need for additional coats to achieve full coverage. Always sample PMS 186 C on your chosen substrate and finish before full installation. Evaluate the color in your actual lighting conditions, as lighting and gloss level will noticeably affect its appearance and vibrancy. For best results, use a white base coat, and confirm the color meets brand expectations in person before proceeding with production scale applications.

How long will it take to receive paint matched to PMS 186 C and what factors affect shipping?

The transit time for paint matched to PMS 186 C depends on your shipping location and the shipping method you select at checkout. Production time must be added to the actual transit days shown for your region. To avoid delays for retail or display deadlines, order PMS 186 C paint well in advance and consider expedited shipping options if timing is critical. Weather, holidays, and carrier volumes can also impact delivery, so always account for possible variability in lead times.

How should I use PMS 186 C for prototypes or concept models to ensure brand alignment?

For prototypes or concept models requiring accurate brand color representation, PMS 186 C can be ordered in a variety of formats such as spray paint, paint pens, or brush-in-cap bottles. Always test the color on your intended material first to ensure it meets visual standards under your ambient lighting. Because PMS 186 C is a saturated red, it may require additional coats and a white undercoat for best coverage and color accuracy. Review the painted sample in final project conditions before committing to larger runs or presentations.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 186 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
