PMS 187 C, part of the Pantone PMS (Pantone Matching System) collection, is recognized for its clear, authoritative presence in visual communications. The color expresses a purposeful, energetic, and formal character, with a slightly warm undertone and a moderate level of darkness. Its vibe is structured, bold, direct, and businesslike, aligning with use cases that demand visual reliability and specification-driven design.

PMS 187 C appears as a dark, saturated red, reflecting a low reflectance value (LRV 11.25). The color has a subtle warm tone, with red as the dominant hue and minimal yellow influence. Saturation is high, contributing to vividness and color impact even at lower light levels. Undertone leans toward a muted, very slightly earthy red rather than pure cherry or orange. This color is moderately sensitive to finish; higher-gloss coatings will intensify color depth, while matte finishes may slightly subdue its boldness.

PMS 187 C is often used in brand identity systems where a formal, strong red is specified for logos, signage, and marketing displays. The color is commonly referenced for use in academic and institutional branding elements requiring a traditional, reputable appearance.

PMS 187 C performs well in projects where a clear, confident red is needed to convey authority or recognizable branding. Care should be taken in substrate preparation; this color’s high saturation and lower light reflectance can reveal surface imperfections and may require additional coats for uniform coverage. As with most saturated reds, color appearance can shift significantly with lighting changes and variations in finish. It is recommended to assess with both physical Pantone references and painted samples, especially when color consistency is mission-critical. Compared to similar reds, PMS 187 C is less overtly bright and avoids strong orange or magenta influences, delivering a more restrained yet assertive result.

This Pantone PMS color is defined by the Pantone Matching System standard. Evaluate the color using a physical Pantone reference and a real paint sample in the intended lighting and finish. Paint appearance varies by finish and lighting.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 187 C

How does the finish or sheen affect the appearance of Pantone PMS 187 C in paint applications?

The finish and sheen selected for Pantone PMS 187 C will significantly influence its visual impact. Gloss finishes intensify the color depth and saturation, making PMS 187 C appear richer and bolder but will also highlight surface imperfections. Matte finishes provide a more subdued look, reducing the boldness and slightly muting the saturation of this saturated red. Satin and eggshell finishes provide a balance between depth and subtlety. When aiming for brand consistency, always evaluate PMS 187 C with physical references in the intended finish and lighting, as the color can shift depending on these choices.

Is Pantone PMS 187 C the right choice if I need to match a specific part for touch-up or repair?

Pantone PMS 187 C is designed for brand color specification and visual consistency across displays, signage, and concept models, not for touch-up or repair on existing parts. If you need a match for touch-up-grade results on a specific part, the best approach is to send a physical sample of your part for a custom match. Relying on the Pantone code alone will not guarantee an exact match due to differences in substrate, gloss, and production variables.

How should I use Pantone PMS 187 C when selecting materials for prototyping or concept models?

Pantone PMS 187 C is often specified in prototypes and concept models when brand alignment and visual accuracy are required. Choose paint formats that allow consistent application across your model materials, such as spray paint or brush-in-cap bottles, to achieve even coverage and true color appearance. For critical projects, assess painted samples of PMS 187 C next to a physical Pantone reference under the intended lighting and finish to confirm the result meets your visual or stakeholder expectations. This reduces risk of color mismatch in final production runs.

What is the typical lead time for paint ordered in Pantone PMS 187 C?

All paint in Pantone PMS 187 C is made to order to meet specification requirements for brand consistency. Typical lead times vary depending on the product type and current production volume. Most orders ship within a few business days, but more complex or large-volume orders may take longer. It is best to place orders with your project schedule in mind and contact support if you have timing constraints.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 187 C?

Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Can I use the Pantone PMS 187 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
