RAL 7003 Moss Grey Paint

Use this decision guide to avoid acceptance issues:

• Standard RAL 7003 is acceptable when:
  • The drawing simply states "RAL 7003" (no gloss/texture/resin specified) and acceptance will be to the RAL standard, not to an existing part.
  • You are coordinating across different materials (e.g., powder, liquid, plastic) where texture and sheen already differ and close visual harmony is sufficient.
  • Work is low-criticality touch-up (chips, edges) where protection and approximate color are the goal.
• Request a sample-based or OEM code match when:
  • High-visibility cosmetic surfaces or large areas will be compared side-by-side with existing parts.
  • Inspection/acceptance will be against an existing coated component rather than a RAL swatch.
  • A known OEM powder coating code exists and must be met (RAL defines color, not the coating process).

Risks to account for: Powder vs liquid coatings and different gloss/texture will shift appearance even at the same RAL code. Evaluate under the actual site lighting; RAL 7003 can look warmer/cooler under different sources. If acceptance is uncertain, send a part sample and specify the target gloss/texture.

Primer needs depend on substrate and repair scope:

• Bare carbon steel: Yes. Clean, remove rust/scale, create profile. Use a corrosion-inhibitive metal primer; spot-prime repairs to bare metal before topcoat.
• Galvanized steel (new or weathered): Yes. Degrease, remove passivation, lightly scuff. Use a galvanized/wash/adhesion primer to prevent peeling.
• Aluminum/Stainless: Usually. Clean with solvent, scuff. Use an etch or epoxy/adhesion primer for reliable bonding.
• Previously painted surfaces: If sound, clean and scuff; prime only exposed bare areas. If unknown compatibility, do a solvent/rub and adhesion test; use a barrier/primer if lifting occurs.
• Powder-coated parts (touch-up): Feather edges; spot-prime any exposed metal. For scuffs that don't break through, clean and apply topcoat without primer.
• Plastics/composites: Clean with plastic-safe solvent, scuff lightly. Use a plastic adhesion promoter; test a small area for compatibility.

Note: Primer color can influence perceived color and coverage. If color uniformity is critical for RAL 7003 Moss Grey, use a consistent neutral grey primer across all parts.

RAL 7003 defines the color target, not the gloss. Select sheen based on how acceptance will be judged:

• If the spec lists gloss (GU at 60 degrees or 85 degrees): Order exactly that sheen.
• If matching an existing part: Measure gloss with a gloss meter or compare to a gloss ladder and order the closest sheen; color will appear different at different gloss levels even at the same RAL.
• Field touch-up with unknown gloss: Choose the sheen that most closely resembles the surrounding area; for mixed sheens, slightly lower sheen can reduce highlight mismatch on small repairs.
• Powder-to-liquid coordination: Confirm the OEM powder gloss range (commonly matte to semi-gloss). Order the liquid topcoat in the same or the closest measured GU range to minimize visible difference.

Tip: Verify the sheen decision under the actual site lighting. Differences in gloss are often more obvious than color differences and can drive acceptance outcomes.

Temporary/urgent repairs: Standard RAL 7003 is appropriate for corrosion control and small chips where close visual harmony is sufficient. It gets protection in place quickly.

Permanent/high-visibility repairs: If the repair will sit adjacent to existing parts and be inspected for uniform appearance, obtain a sample-based or OEM powder-code match and specify gloss/texture before coating large areas.

Practical plan: Use standard RAL 7003 for immediate touch-up to stabilize the surface. During planned downtime, send a representative part for a targeted match and align sheen/texture. Always review under site lighting prior to sign-off.
