Pantone™ PMS 658 U

Pantone PMS 658 U is a color reference, not a complete coating specification. It defines a visual color target, but it does not control sheen, texture, film build, or the original substrate. When you apply a new paint matched to PMS 658 U over an existing finish, even small differences in gloss, aging, or surface prep can make the color appear different. Because of these variables, a Pantone match is best used when PMS 658 U itself is the target color, not when trying to blend into an unknown or previously applied finish.

For PMS 658 U, ordering a small sample first is the safest way to support brand approvals. Apply the sample using the same product format and surface you plan to use in the final build. Review it under the actual lighting where it will be installed, since lighting can shift how the color is perceived. Once PMS 658 U is approved in context, you can proceed with larger quantities knowing the visual result aligns with expectations.

Safety and VOC characteristics are determined by the specific paint product used to match PMS 658 U, not by the Pantone color itself. Always review the Safety Data Sheet for the exact product and follow the recommended ventilation, handling, and personal protection guidance. Requirements can vary by product type and application method, so do not assume that all PMS 658 U paints behave the same from a safety standpoint.

Coverage for a spray can matched to PMS 658 U depends on surface texture, application technique, and the number of coats required. Saturated Pantone colors often need additional coats to achieve even hide. Use the coverage guidance listed for the specific spray product as a starting point, then add extra cans to account for test sprays, overlap, and any additional coats needed for uniform color.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

The 11oz spray will cover about 20 square feet per coat. Keep in mind that it is difficult to gauge how much spray you'll need as it is highly dependent on how it is applied. It is better to have too much than run short.
