Pantone™ PMS 657 U

PMS 657 U is a Pantone reference color, not a paint formula. Pantone books are printed standards viewed under specific lighting, while paint is applied to real substrates with a chosen sheen. Because of this, some difference in appearance is normal.

Sheen, substrate, film build, and lighting can all change how PMS 657 U looks compared to the book. To make a confident decision, apply a sample of the matched paint to the actual material and view it under the same lighting where it will be used. Use the Pantone book as the target, and approve the painted sample based on real conditions.

Start by confirming that PMS 657 U is the correct Pantone reference for your project. Then select the paint format that fits your application, such as spray paint or another available option for branding and display work.

Next, choose the sheen and quantity you need. Sheen affects perceived color, so select it based on how the surface will be viewed. Review all selections before checkout to be sure the format, sheen, and amount align with your project plan. If color approval is critical, order a small quantity first for evaluation.

PMS 657 U is commonly used in prototypes and concept models where visual brand alignment matters. The goal is to match the Pantone reference closely enough for review and approval, not to define a manufacturing process.

For best results, apply the paint to the same material and with the same method planned for the prototype. Evaluate the color under expected presentation lighting. If multiple materials are involved, test PMS 657 U on each one, since the appearance can vary by surface.

When using PMS 657 U across larger surfaces, uniform application is key to consistent appearance. Plan for even coverage, consistent spray distance or application technique, and adequate drying time between coats.

Some Pantone colors can require additional coats to achieve uniform hide, especially when applied over contrasting substrates. Applying a suitable primer and maintaining the same batch and application method across the entire area helps reduce visible variation.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

The 11oz spray will cover about 20 square feet per coat. Keep in mind that it is difficult to gauge how much spray you'll need as it is highly dependent on how it is applied. It is better to have too much than run short.

We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
