Pantone™ PMS 659 U

PMS 659 U is a Pantone color target, not a single fixed appearance. The way it looks can change based on the light source, light color temperature, and viewing angle. Daylight, LED, and fluorescent lighting can each shift how blue tones are perceived, sometimes making PMS 659 U appear more violet or more muted.

For brand-critical work, evaluate a physical sample of PMS 659 U under the same lighting where it will be used. This helps reduce surprises caused by metamerism, where the color appears to change under different lights even though the match is technically correct.

As a general planning estimate, one spray can of PMS 659 U covers about 10 to 12 square feet per coat. Actual coverage depends on surface texture, application technique, and the number of coats needed.

Highly saturated Pantone colors like PMS 659 U may require additional coats for even color and hide, especially over dark or uneven substrates. For larger or high-visibility projects, ordering extra cans or testing coverage on your actual surface is recommended.

Yes. Changing the finish can noticeably change how PMS 659 U is perceived, even when the color match target is the same. Gloss finishes tend to look brighter and more saturated, while matte or flat finishes can appear softer or darker.

When comparing samples, a matte PMS 659 U and a gloss PMS 659 U can look different enough to seem mismatched. For brand approvals, always evaluate samples in the same finish that will be used in the final application.

Whether a primer is needed for PMS 659 U depends on the paint type, the substrate, and the exposure conditions. Primer is commonly recommended for bare metals, plastics, unfinished wood, or previously coated surfaces with uneven color or porosity.

Using the right primer can improve adhesion, color uniformity, and coverage, which is especially important for saturated Pantone colors. If appearance consistency matters, priming first and testing PMS 659 U on the actual substrate is a practical step before full production.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
