PMS 658 C from the Pantone PMS collection is a standard-mixing, light blue with moderate visual lightness and a subtle, businesslike character. Its overall vibe is understated, calm, clean, professional, and cool. The color’s specific hue is rooted in the blue-violet range, which contributes to its mild, non-aggressive appearance often used to foster trust and neutrality in branded environments.

PMS 658 C presents as a light-to-mid blue (measured LRV 48.28), offering moderate reflectivity suitable for a range of backgrounds. The color exhibits a cool tendency, with its position near the blue-violet sector on the hue spectrum. PMS 658 C shows low to moderate saturation, making it subdued rather than vivid. The undertone is soft with a slight suggestion of violet, contributing to a gentle, almost powdery appearance. The color maintains its visual identity well in both matte and gloss finishes, but higher sheens can increase perceived brightness.

PMS 658 C performs well where a discrete, approachable blue is needed, especially in corporate settings, event displays, and product mock-ups. For best results, sample the color under the intended lighting and finish, as cool colors like this can look starker in warm artificial light. PMS 658 C maintains controlled visual clarity relative to deeper or more saturated blues, but may show more color shift depending on adjacent materials and lighting temperature.

Similar colors:
PMS 656 C – A lighter, cooler blue, perceptually more washed-out and closer to a pastel.

PMS 659 C – Slightly deeper and more intense, offering a stronger blue presence while remaining cool.

PMS 649 C – More neutral and less chromatic, reading as a grayer, more understated blue.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 658 C

Why can PMS 658 C not be reliably cross-referenced to other paint brands?

PMS 658 C is a Pantone PMS standard designed for consistent visual reproduction, but most paint companies have their own unique palettes and formulations. This means PMS 658 C does not have an exact equivalent in other brands' systems, especially for colors with specific visual qualities like lightness, hue, or chroma. Cross-referencing to other brands usually results in approximate matches rather than true visual alignment, which can be critical for brand standards. When precise color accuracy is essential, always specify PMS 658 C directly or sample the intended product before full production.

How should I proceed if I need a touch-up-grade match to PMS 658 C?

If you require a touch-up-grade match for an existing surface that references PMS 658 C, the best approach is to send a physical sample or part to be matched. Pantone color standards like PMS 658 C are designed for consistent reproduction on new projects, displays, and brand environments, not for touch-up or repair. Custom matching ensures the closest possible result to your specific surface and material when exact touch-up is required.

What VOC and safety considerations apply when using paint matched to PMS 658 C?

VOC content and safety requirements for PMS 658 C depend entirely on the type of paint or coating you select, such as spray paint, epoxy, or house paint. Always review the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for your chosen product, follow all handling instructions, use proper ventilation, and wear recommended personal protective equipment. The Pantone code PMS 658 C specifies only the color, not the safety or environmental properties of the final product.

How do I choose the right paint type for PMS 658 C for interior or exterior use?

When specifying PMS 658 C for a project, choose an interior or exterior paint based on where the coated item will be placed and the expected exposure. Use interior paint for indoor displays and environments protected from weather. For outdoor or high-exposure locations, select an exterior-grade product that offers greater durability and weather resistance. The color PMS 658 C can be matched in a range of formats, but selecting the appropriate base ensures lasting performance and appearance.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 658 C?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 658 C depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. We do our best to make sure you get your paint on time. Learn more about paint lead times at MyPerfectColor.
Can I use the Pantone PMS 658 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

See our Primer Selection Table to see what primer you might need and learn more about when you might need a primer. Most people don't use a primer for a touch up paint application, but a primer may improve adhesion and is typically recommended for exterior applications.
How do I convert PMS 658 C to a different color from another paint company?

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 658 C in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
