Pantone™ PMS 317 U

PMS 317 U is defined by the Pantone Matching System as a visual reference standard, not as a paint formula. When you compare a painted sample of PMS 317 U to a Pantone book, expect some differences. Pantone books are printed on paper with controlled ink and finish, while paint is applied to real substrates with a specific sheen.

Sheen, substrate, film thickness, and lighting can all change how PMS 317 U appears. For critical brand work, the correct approach is to apply a sample of the paint to the actual material and view it under the intended lighting, then compare that result to the Pantone book as a visual target rather than an exact side by side match.

Ordering a standard Pantone PMS 317 U match is appropriate when the Pantone reference itself is the color target. This is common for brand facing displays, signage, exhibits, prototypes, and marketing installations where visual brand alignment matters more than matching an existing painted surface.

PMS 317 U works well in scenarios where consistency with brand standards is the primary requirement. It is not intended for touch-up or repair of previously painted items, where aging, substrate, and existing coatings would require a different matching approach.

PMS 317 U is a licensed Pantone color standard. Licensed reproduction means the color is produced using Pantone approved targets and processes rather than an unverified interpretation.

Using an authorized Pantone PMS 317 U match reduces the risk of visible brand inconsistency across vendors and materials. This is especially important for marketing, display, and brand experience projects where color accuracy is reviewed against official Pantone standards.

Sheen selection can noticeably affect how PMS 317 U is perceived. Higher sheen finishes typically appear brighter and more saturated, while lower sheen finishes can appear softer or slightly muted.

When selecting a sheen for PMS 317 U, consider the viewing distance, substrate texture, and lighting conditions. If the color will be viewed up close or under strong lighting, testing a sample in the chosen sheen on the actual material is recommended to confirm the visual result before full production.

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

The 11oz spray will cover about 20 square feet per coat. Keep in mind that it is difficult to gauge how much spray you'll need as it is highly dependent on how it is applied. It is better to have too much than run short.
