Pantone™ PMS 316 U

PMS 316 U is a Pantone Matching System color, which is a visual reference standard rather than a paint formula. When ordering PMS 316 U paint, the goal is to visually reproduce the Pantone reference as closely as possible on the selected substrate and finish. Exact numerical matching is not guaranteed because paint chemistry, application method, and surface texture all influence appearance. For brand-facing applications, this level of visual accuracy is typically appropriate, but it should not be treated as an exact material-to-material match.

PMS 316 U should not be used as a touch-up or repair color. Pantone PMS codes communicate a brand color target, not the exact color of an existing painted object that may have aged, faded, or been applied with a different process. If you need touch-up-grade accuracy to an existing part, the correct path is to send a physical sample for custom color matching. Ordering PMS 316 U paint is best suited for brand reproduction where the Pantone reference itself is the target.

The appearance of PMS 316 U can shift depending on lighting type and viewing environment. Different light sources such as daylight, LED, or fluorescent lighting can change how saturation and depth are perceived, a phenomenon known as metamerism. For best results, evaluate a painted sample of PMS 316 U under the same lighting conditions where it will be installed or displayed. This helps confirm that the color meets brand expectations in its real-world setting.

Yes. For projects involving brand approval, signage, or high-visibility installations, ordering a small sample of PMS 316 U is strongly recommended. Sampling allows you to review the color on the actual substrate, with the selected finish, and under installed lighting before committing to a full order. This step reduces risk and helps ensure the final production aligns with brand standards and stakeholder expectations.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

The 11oz spray will cover about 20 square feet per coat. Keep in mind that it is difficult to gauge how much spray you'll need as it is highly dependent on how it is applied. It is better to have too much than run short.
