Yes, Pantone PMS 236 U can be matched for metal applications, but surface preparation is critical. Bare metal typically requires proper cleaning and a suitable primer, while existing powder-coated surfaces often need scuffing to promote adhesion.

Be aware that the existing coating, surface texture, and gloss level can influence how the PMS 236 U color appears. Because Pantone is a visual target, not a process specification, evaluating a sample on your actual metal substrate is recommended before committing to a full production run.

Pantone PMS 236 U defines a color target only and does not specify sheen, film build, substrate, or application method. Existing finishes already have those variables locked in.

Because of this, a Pantone match is unlikely to visually disappear when applied next to an existing coating, even if the color is close. Pantone PMS references are best used for new, brand-facing surfaces where visual alignment to the Pantone standard is the goal, not for blending into an existing finish.

Primer requirements for Pantone PMS 236 U depend on the paint type, substrate, and exposure conditions. Porous surfaces, bare metal, plastics, and previously coated surfaces in poor condition often require a primer for proper adhesion and uniform appearance.

Using the correct primer can also improve color consistency, especially for more saturated Pantone colors. If you are unsure, confirm primer recommendations based on your specific substrate and the paint format you plan to use, or test the color over the intended primer before final application.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

The 11oz spray will cover about 20 square feet per coat. Keep in mind that it is difficult to gauge how much spray you'll need as it is highly dependent on how it is applied. It is better to have too much than run short.
