PMS 188 U is a Pantone PMS color identified within the Pantone Matching System and commonly specified for brand-controlled visual environments. It conveys a deep, assertive, grounded, formal, and high-contrast red character.

The color appears very dark, with a low Light Reflectance Value of 5.84. It reads as warm and highly saturated, giving it strong visual density and presence, with subtle brownish undertones that add weight and reduce brightness.

PMS 188 U works well on smooth, well-prepared surfaces where depth and uniformity are important, particularly in controlled brand or display environments. Due to its darkness and saturation, it often benefits from a consistent primer and multiple thin coats to avoid patchiness, especially over lighter or uneven substrates.

Finish choice and lighting can significantly influence perceived depth, with higher sheens increasing contrast and lower sheens softening surface irregularities.

This Pantone PMS color is defined by the Pantone Matching System standard. Evaluate the color using a physical Pantone reference and a real paint sample in the intended lighting and finish. Paint appearance varies by finish and lighting.

Similar colors:
PMS 187 U: slightly brighter and more open, with a clearer red appearance.
PMS 1807 U: darker and heavier, with more muted red-brown depth.
PMS 7421 U: lighter and more vivid, with increased red intensity.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 188 U

What should I expect for batch to batch consistency when reordering Pantone PMS 188 U paint?

Pantone PMS 188 U is a visual color standard, not a fixed paint formula. Each order is matched to the Pantone reference at the time of production. To keep results consistent across reorders, use the same product type and sheen each time, and evaluate color using the same reference target and lighting conditions.

If PMS 188 U is being used for a brand facing display or marketing element, plan to approve a sample from the first order and keep that approved piece as your comparison standard for future runs. Changing substrates, finishes, or application methods can change how the color is perceived, even when the Pantone target is the same.

How should I prepare surfaces before applying Pantone PMS 188 U paint?

For Pantone PMS 188 U, start with a clean, dry surface. Remove dust, oils, and residues using a suitable cleaner or degreaser. Smooth, glossy surfaces may benefit from light scuffing to improve adhesion, followed by cleaning to remove sanding residue.

Because saturated Pantone colors can be sensitive to substrate and application, apply a small test area first to confirm adhesion and appearance. Proper surface preparation helps achieve more uniform coverage and a more reliable visual match to the Pantone reference.

Is Pantone PMS 188 U suitable for prototypes and concept models?

Yes. Pantone PMS 188 U is commonly used for prototypes and concept models where visual brand alignment is important. The Pantone code communicates the intended color clearly across teams and vendors during early stage design and review.

For prototype workflows, select a paint format that matches how the model will be built and evaluated, such as spray paint for even visual coverage or small format paints for detailed components. Review the color under the expected lighting conditions and on the actual substrate before final approval.

How much area does a spray can of Pantone PMS 188 U typically cover?

Coverage for Pantone PMS 188 U spray paint depends on the surface texture, application technique, and number of coats. Highly saturated colors like this often require multiple coats to achieve uniform appearance and hide.

Many users plan spray cans for smaller parts, panels, or display components rather than large continuous surfaces, and order extra material to allow for test spraying and color approval. Rough or absorbent substrates will reduce coverage compared to smooth, sealed surfaces.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 188 U?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 188 U depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. We do our best to make sure you get your paint on time. Learn more about paint lead times at MyPerfectColor.
Can I use the Pantone PMS 188 U for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
