Pantone™ PMS 186 U

Pantone PMS 186 U is commonly used as a brand color target for signs, displays, and exhibit components where visual consistency matters. The Pantone code communicates the intended color appearance, but it is not a paint formula. When ordering paint matched to PMS 186 U, the goal is to visually align to the Pantone reference under expected lighting and viewing conditions.

For high-visibility or brand-critical installations, it is best to evaluate a sample applied to the actual substrate. Material type, surface texture, finish, and lighting can all influence how PMS 186 U appears once fabricated.

The choice between matte and gloss can significantly change how Pantone PMS 186 U is perceived. Gloss finishes generally increase color saturation and visual punch, which can make PMS 186 U appear brighter and more vivid, especially at a distance. Matte finishes reduce glare and reflections, which can be helpful under strong lighting or close viewing.

If brand standards specify a finish, follow that guidance. If not, consider where and how the color will be viewed, including lighting conditions and distance, and test the finish on the actual surface before committing to production.

Pantone PMS 186 U is a vivid, saturated red, and colors like this often have lower hide compared to neutral or darker tones. You may need additional coats to achieve uniform color and avoid seeing the underlying surface.

Using a suitable primer and applying consistent coats can improve results. Testing PMS 186 U on the actual substrate helps confirm coverage expectations before full production, especially for large display or exhibit elements.

Proper surface preparation is essential for accurate appearance and adhesion when applying paint matched to Pantone PMS 186 U. Surfaces should be clean, dry, and free of dust, oils, or residues. Light scuffing may be appropriate on smooth surfaces to promote adhesion.

Because PMS 186 U is often used in brand-facing applications, applying a small test area on the prepared surface is recommended. This confirms both adhesion and visual appearance before completing the full application.

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

The 11oz spray will cover about 20 square feet per coat. Keep in mind that it is difficult to gauge how much spray you'll need as it is highly dependent on how it is applied. It is better to have too much than run short.
