PMS 186 U is a Pantone PMS color used as a standardized reference for consistent color communication across vendors and materials. It conveys a strong, energetic presence with a clear red character that reads assertive, attention-forward, and brand-driven.

The color appears dark-to-mid in value with a low light reflectance value of 14.55 and reads distinctly warm, leaning toward an orange-red. It is highly saturated, visually intense, and maintains a clean red undertone with minimal brown or blue influence.

PMS 186 U works well in brand-facing applications where a strong red presence must remain consistent across different components. Due to its high saturation and relatively low lightness, it may require additional coats for even coverage, and primer selection can help manage contrast on underlying surfaces.

The following examples reflect commonly cited branding associations and are based on publicly referenced design usage; they are illustrative, not exhaustive or exclusive. PMS 186 is widely cited in branding literature as a reference red associated with Coca-Cola global brand materials and is commonly referenced in corporate identity systems for high-recognition consumer brands.

Similar colors:
PMS 186 C: slightly brighter and cleaner, with a more luminous red appearance.
PMS 187 U: darker and deeper, with increased visual weight and less brightness.
PMS 485 U: lighter and more open, with a stronger orange-red emphasis.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 186 U

How is Pantone PMS 186 U typically used for signage, displays, and exhibit fabrication?

Pantone PMS 186 U is commonly used as a brand color target for signs, displays, and exhibit components where visual consistency matters. The Pantone code communicates the intended color appearance, but it is not a paint formula. When ordering paint matched to PMS 186 U, the goal is to visually align to the Pantone reference under expected lighting and viewing conditions.

For high-visibility or brand-critical installations, it is best to evaluate a sample applied to the actual substrate. Material type, surface texture, finish, and lighting can all influence how PMS 186 U appears once fabricated.

Should I choose a matte or gloss finish for Pantone PMS 186 U?

The choice between matte and gloss can significantly change how Pantone PMS 186 U is perceived. Gloss finishes generally increase color saturation and visual punch, which can make PMS 186 U appear brighter and more vivid, especially at a distance. Matte finishes reduce glare and reflections, which can be helpful under strong lighting or close viewing.

If brand standards specify a finish, follow that guidance. If not, consider where and how the color will be viewed, including lighting conditions and distance, and test the finish on the actual surface before committing to production.

What should I expect for coverage and hide when applying Pantone PMS 186 U paint?

Pantone PMS 186 U is a vivid, saturated red, and colors like this often have lower hide compared to neutral or darker tones. You may need additional coats to achieve uniform color and avoid seeing the underlying surface.

Using a suitable primer and applying consistent coats can improve results. Testing PMS 186 U on the actual substrate helps confirm coverage expectations before full production, especially for large display or exhibit elements.

What basic surface preparation is recommended before applying Pantone PMS 186 U?

Proper surface preparation is essential for accurate appearance and adhesion when applying paint matched to Pantone PMS 186 U. Surfaces should be clean, dry, and free of dust, oils, or residues. Light scuffing may be appropriate on smooth surfaces to promote adhesion.

Because PMS 186 U is often used in brand-facing applications, applying a small test area on the prepared surface is recommended. This confirms both adhesion and visual appearance before completing the full application.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 186 U?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 186 U depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. Can I use the Pantone PMS 186 U for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

How do I convert PMS 186 U to a different color from another paint company?

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 186 U in paint, we don't provide any crossover information.
