Ordering Pantone PMS 123 U paint means you are requesting a paint color matched to the Pantone PMS 123 U visual standard. Pantone PMS is a color communication system, not a paint formula, coating recipe, or finish specification.

The goal is visual alignment to the Pantone reference under normal viewing conditions. The match does not define sheen, texture, durability, or how the color will look on every material. Substrate, finish choice, lighting, and application method can all affect the final appearance.

Whether a primer is needed for Pantone PMS 123 U depends on the paint type, the substrate, and the exposure conditions. Bare metals, plastics, or porous surfaces often require a compatible primer to improve adhesion and color uniformity.

Because PMS 123 U is a bright, saturated yellow, a suitable primer can also help with hide and reduce the number of topcoats needed. Always select a primer recommended for your specific substrate and paint system.

Pantone PMS 123 U does not have a guaranteed equivalent in other paint brand color systems. Each manufacturer uses its own colorants, bases, and formulas, which means cross-references are usually approximations.

This is especially true for vivid Pantone colors like PMS 123 U, where small formulation differences can be visually noticeable. If brand accuracy matters, ordering a direct Pantone PMS match is more reliable than relying on a crossover chart.

For Pantone PMS 123 U matched spray paint, multiple light coats typically produce better color uniformity than one heavy coat. Light passes help avoid runs and allow the color to build evenly.

Allow each coat to flash off before applying the next, following the guidance for your specific paint system. Bright yellows often need additional coats to achieve consistent coverage, especially over darker substrates.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
