PMS 7642 C is part of the Pantone PMS collection, designed for standardized color communication in branding and manufacturing. This color presents a deep, serious, and vivid visual character with a muted but assertive presence. It exhibits a rich, substantial vibe and is often chosen for environments or objects requiring a color that suggests reliability, distinction, and gravitas.

PMS 7642 C appears dark, with a notably low LRV of 6.09. The color demonstrates a cool red tendency, closer to a muted burgundy than a warm crimson. The saturation level is pronounced, giving it strong chromatic intensity without appearing overly bright. The undertone leans toward cool, with subtle blue influences that keep it from feeling too brown or orange. This color is sensitive to finish; gloss finishes may heighten its richness, while matte finishes can subdue its vividness.

PMS 7642 C is most effective for branding, signage, and display applications where a deep, saturated color statement is desired. It is important to assess this color under final lighting conditions, as its depth and cool undertone may shift in appearance depending on the environment. Due to its high saturation and low LRV, it may require additional coats for uniform coverage, especially over lighter substrates. It is less prone to visible color shift compared to lighter or more neutral reds, but gloss or sheen selection will significantly impact its perceived richness and depth.

Similar colors:
PMS 7643 C — Slightly lighter and warmer, with a more muted character.

PMS 209 C — Lighter and less saturated, appearing more subdued and traditional.

PMS 7638 C — More chromatic and higher in red content, lacking the subtle cool influence of 7642 C.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 7642 C

How does using Pantone PMS 7642 C help maintain brand consistency across marketing and display applications?

Pantone PMS 7642 C is a standardized color reference that allows brands to communicate an exact color target to all vendors, fabricators, and installers. Using a defined Pantone code like PMS 7642 C ensures that branded elements, such as displays and signage, appear visually consistent and recognizable across different materials, finishes, and production runs. This consistency is key to building a unified brand experience in any marketing, event, or retail environment.

Should I use a matte or gloss finish for my Pantone PMS 7642 C brand application?

With Pantone PMS 7642 C, selecting between matte and gloss finishes depends on the visual effect you want and the environment. Matte minimizes glare and reflections, which works well for close viewing or controlled lighting. Gloss highlights the saturation and depth of this burgundy, especially under lighting or at a distance, but introduces more glare. In areas with strong lighting, gloss can appear punchier, but excessive glare may distract from the color. For trade shows, displays, or signage seen mostly at a distance, gloss often enhances visual impact. For close-up brand experiences or environments with variable lighting, matte offers a more subdued, consistent appearance. Consider final lighting and viewing conditions when making your choice.

What should I expect when matching Pantone PMS 7642 C on different materials?

Pantone PMS 7642 C, like other saturated Pantone colors, can present challenges when matching across different substrates. Variables like surface texture, material type, and finish can affect appearance, so it is normal to see slight differences. MyPerfectColor matches the PMS 7642 C reference using color standards and visual evaluation controls designed for brand and display needs. For large or highly visible projects, always review sample panels under final lighting conditions before full production to confirm satisfaction with the match.

What practical steps should I take for uniform results when applying Pantone PMS 7642 C over a large area?

When using Pantone PMS 7642 C over large surfaces, start with a properly primed, even substrate. Plan for multiple coats, since saturated colors like this may have lower hide, especially over lighter backgrounds. Use consistent spray or roller technique and maintain a wet edge to avoid lap marks. Complete sections fully before stopping, and verify each coat under the actual lighting where the display or signage will be viewed. This approach minimizes patchiness and supports the uniform, branded appearance intended by PMS 7642 C.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 7642 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
