PMS 209 C is part of the Pantone PMS system, developed as a color communication standard for consistent reproduction across materials. This color has an understated, professional, grounded, and refined vibe with a technical and composed appearance. The low LRV value contributes to its distinctly deep and muted presence, making it appropriate for applications requiring serious, impactful color statements.
PMS 209 C appears as a very dark color, with a low measured light reflectance value (LRV 5.84). PMS 209 C presents a cool-leaning red tone, subtly shifted toward purple (due to its hue angle just above 0). The color is moderately saturated without being vivid, resulting in a subdued, controlled look. PMS 209 C carries noticeable blue undertones, distinguishing it from warmer, brownish reds. This color may show increased depth or dullness depending on gloss: higher-gloss finishes can make it appear slightly more saturated, while matte surfaces can further mute its appearance.
PMS 209 C is widely specified in visual branding where a formal, authoritative, or institutional impression is needed. PMS 209 C is frequently used in university identity systems—most notably cited in higher education branding and signage. PMS 209 C is often found in marketing displays or fabricated graphics for retail, pop-up, and experiential brand environments requiring strict adherence to Pantone standards.
PMS 209 C works well in applications where a muted, authoritative red is necessary. It is especially useful for branding elements, exhibit components, or retail environments demanding Pantone-matched color consistency. When specifying this color, be aware that its deep shade may require multiple coats to achieve uniform coverage, especially over light substrates. Lighting can greatly affect the perceived warmth and saturation; test samples under installation lighting whenever possible. Compared to similar deep reds, PMS 209 C may appear cooler and less vivid, offering a more disciplined, less attention-seeking look.
This Pantone PMS color is defined by the Pantone Matching System standard. Evaluate the color using a physical Pantone reference and a real paint sample in the intended lighting and finish. Paint appearance varies by finish and lighting.

The way PMS 209 C looks can shift based on the type of lighting and environment where it is used. This deep, muted red may appear cooler, warmer, or more or less saturated under different light sources such as daylight, LED, or fluorescent. For brand displays and fabricated components where exact color appearance matters, always evaluate PMS 209 C under the lighting conditions of the final installation to confirm that it matches your expectations. This helps avoid surprises during project completion.
For PMS 209 C, apply multiple light coats rather than one heavy coat. This color is deep and may require extra coats over lighter backgrounds to reach full coverage and accurate appearance. Allow proper drying or flash time between each coat. Following this method will help achieve an even, brand-consistent finish and reduce runs or unevenness on displays, signage, or fabricated parts.
Pantone PMS 209 C is a standardized color within the Pantone Matching System but does not directly convert to other paint company palettes. Most paint brands create their own color collections, and Pantone hues like PMS 209 C often have no exact equivalent elsewhere. For brand consistency and specification, always reference the actual Pantone standard and order PMS 209 C by its Pantone code instead of seeking cross-brand approximations.
When a project requires precise brand color approval, order a sample of PMS 209 C in the intended paint format and finish. Evaluate this sample under the same lighting and on the same surface type as your final installation. This approach supports clear signoff and helps avoid mismatches or change orders on large-scale or highly visible brand installations.
Unfortunately, no.
Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.
The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 209 C in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
