PMS 7616 C is a standardized color from the Pantone Matching System (Pantone PMS collection). Visually, it presents as a deep, muted red with significant orange-brown undertones, producing an appearance that is strong, grounded, and subdued. This color conveys an earthy, robust, technical, and understated character and is often used in environments where warmth and visual weight are desired.

PMS 7616 C appears quite dark, with a low light reflectance value (LRV 8.82).

The color has a warm tendency due to its pronounced orange influence.

This color is moderately saturated, making it visually assertive without being overly bright.

PMS 7616 C contains a recognizably earthy undertone, resulting in a muted, almost brick-like red.

The color may show some sensitivity to finish: in matte finishes, it can appear more subdued and earthy, while higher-gloss finishes may accentuate its vibrancy and depth.

PMS 7616 C works well in branding and fabricated display environments where a grounded, earthy, and warm red is specified. It provides visual weight and warmth without the intensity or brightness of more chromatic reds. When specifying for paint applications, be mindful that highly saturated and darker colors like PMS 7616 C may require additional coats and careful surface preparation for uniform, streak-free coverage. The perceived depth and undertone can shift subtly depending on finish and surrounding lighting conditions, so evaluating a physical sample in context is recommended. Compared to similar reds, PMS 7616 C is less vivid and more muted, with brownish undertones that distinguish it from cleaner or cooler reds.

Similar colors:

  • PMS 1807 C – Slightly darker and more muted, with increased brown undertone and less visible orange.
  • PMS 7621 C – More intense and chromatic, appearing brighter and visibly more saturated red.
  • PMS 7622 C – Warmer and lighter, with a more pronounced orange component and less muted appearance.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 7616 C

What are the best practices for comparing PMS 7616 C color samples during brand approval?

When comparing PMS 7616 C samples for brand approval, make sure to evaluate all samples under the same type of lighting and at the same angle to minimize perception shifts. Use the same substrate or base material, as color can look different on metal, plastic, or paper. Allow spray paint or coatings of PMS 7616 C to fully dry and cure before making your final judgment, since its warm, earthy undertone and depth may appear uneven or off while still wet. For critical approval, use reference Pantone swatches and assess samples side by side in the intended lighting environment.

How should I decide between matte and gloss finishes for PMS 7616 C in a brand display application?

If you need PMS 7616 C to look grounded and subdued, a matte finish will minimize glare and deliver an earthy effect that reduces visible punch. Choose matte when minimizing reflections in direct lighting or when displays are viewed up close. Gloss finishes enhance the vibrancy and depth of PMS 7616 C but may produce glare, especially under spotlights or in retail lighting. Consider gloss if you want a richer, more saturated look for distant viewing or to maximize visual impact. The same PMS 7616 C formula will appear noticeably different based on the finish, so evaluate sample panels before finalizing your choice.

What should I expect regarding durability when selecting PMS 7616 C spray paint for a display project?

The durability of PMS 7616 C spray paint depends on the type of paint selected, the surface preparation, and your intended environment. For the best results, make sure the substrate is clean, dry, and properly primed. If the display will see heavy handling or outdoor exposure, a protective clear topcoat over PMS 7616 C may be necessary. Interior marketing and display use often only requires standard coating, but always match the paint system to the level of exposure and use. Coverage may require multiple coats due to the color's depth and saturation, so plan for this in your workflow.

When is ordering a standard Pantone PMS match for PMS 7616 C the right choice?

Ordering PMS 7616 C as a standard Pantone PMS match is appropriate for brand-facing displays, marketing installations, and prototypes where the Pantone target is specified for visual brand accuracy. It is the most efficient way to meet color consistency requirements for temporary displays, branded environments, and fabricated signage where a fast, reliable match to the Pantone reference is needed. For major permanent installations or projects that require verified matching under specific lighting and substrate conditions, consider requesting a sample or additional approval steps.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 7616 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
