PMS 2186 C is a standardized Pantone Matching System (PMS) color that falls within the Pantone PMS collection, frequently used for brand and identity design projects requiring precise color reproduction. This color has a distinctly deep, bold character with a notable blue-violet hue, and imparts a technical, impactful, and modern vibe. Its appearance is both striking and refined, suitable for environments demanding visual consistency and brand alignment.

PMS 2186 C appears distinctly dark due to its low light reflectance value (LRV 6.49). The color has a cool tendency, leaning toward the blue-violet end of the spectrum. PMS 2186 C exhibits very high chroma, resulting in strong saturation and vividness. The undertone is predominantly blue with a subtle violet influence. This color may demonstrate finish sensitivity, with gloss and sheen levels potentially affecting perceived color richness and depth.

PMS 2186 C is operationally effective where a deeply saturated bluish violet is required for brand displays, signage, or marketing environments that demand visual uniformity. It works well when boldness and clear color definition are priorities, especially in controlled lighting. Expect finish and substrate to influence final appearance—glossier finishes may increase color vibrancy, while matte finishes could mute it. Compared to similar PMS violets, this color holds more chromatic intensity and can appear darker, which should be considered when used alongside other saturated hues. Evaluate all applications under actual lighting conditions due to the color's low light reflectance and potential shifts in perception.

Similar colors:
PMS 268 C – Shares a similar violet character, but is slightly darker and more muted.

PMS 2096 C – Offers a comparable level of saturation but with a redder, warmer undertone.

PMS 2597 C – Is lighter and less chromatic, yielding a softer violet appearance.

PMS 2718 C – Has a cooler, bluer cast and higher lightness, resulting in a brighter effect.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 2186 C

Can Pantone PMS 2186 C be cross-referenced to any other paint brand colors?

Pantone PMS 2186 C is a unique color defined within the Pantone Matching System and does not have a direct equivalent in other paint company palettes. Most paint brands use their own distinct color formulations, and there is no standard conversion for vivid or highly saturated Pantone hues like PMS 2186 C. For brand-critical or marketing projects, always specify PMS 2186 C directly rather than attempting to find a crossover or substitute from another brand.

How much area will a spray can of PMS 2186 C paint cover, and how should I estimate how many cans I need?

One standard spray can of PMS 2186 C typically covers about 20 square feet per coat on a smooth, sealed surface. However, coverage can vary depending on application technique, surface texture, color intensity, and the number of coats required. Because PMS 2186 C is highly saturated and dark, you may need an additional coat to achieve full color uniformity. For best results, calculate your total project area, plan on two coats for even coverage, and consider ordering extra for test applications and spray pattern overlap.

What challenges are there in matching Pantone PMS 2186 C, and how does MyPerfectColor address these?

Pantone PMS 2186 C is a deep, saturated bluish violet, and vibrant hues like this can be difficult to reproduce accurately across different materials and finishes. Variables such as gloss, substrate type, and lighting conditions affect the final color appearance. MyPerfectColor specializes in matching Pantone PMS colors as closely as possible, using precise mixing methods and color reference standards. For brand displays and marketing purposes, this approach delivers reliable visual consistency, but always test samples in your intended environment to confirm acceptance prior to full production.

What should I know about painting plastics or low-energy materials with PMS 2186 C?

When using PMS 2186 C paint on plastics or low-surface-energy materials, proper adhesion may require a specialized primer or surface preparation. Plastics vary widely in how well they accept paint, and highly saturated colors can make any application flaws more visible. Always test PMS 2186 C on a sample of your actual substrate before large-scale application to ensure satisfactory adhesion and appearance. Consult with your paint supplier for compatible primers or preparation steps for your specific plastic type.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 2186 C?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 2186 C depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. Can I use the Pantone PMS 2186 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

How much area will one spray can cover? And what is Pantone PMS 2186 C spray paint made of?

MyPerfectColor custom spray paint enables you to conveniently achieve a professional spray-smooth finish in any color in any sheen. Do I need a primer for Pantone PMS 2186 C?

See our Primer Selection Table to see what primer you might need and learn more about when you might need a primer. Most people don't use a primer for a touch up paint application, but a primer may improve adhesion and is typically recommended for exterior applications.
How do I convert PMS 2186 C to a different color from another paint company?

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 2186 C in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
