PMS 2146 C is a Pantone Matching System (PMS) color used for precise, standardized color communication across multiple materials. This color reads as a deep, cool-toned blue characterized by very low reflectance, vivid chromatic intensity, and a somewhat technical, commanding, or assertive visual impression. It is often valued in applications where clarity, contrast, and strict brand alignment are critical, such as display fabrication, industrial design, and marketing environments.

PMS 2146 C appears distinctly dark due to a low LRV of 4.5. The color has a cool blue tonality, with minimal visual warmth. Saturation is high, presenting a vivid and clearly defined blue identity. Undertone is predominantly blue with no significant green or purple shift visible under typical lighting conditions. The color’s visual richness and darkness make it highly sensitive to finish (matte versus gloss) and surrounding illumination.

PMS 2146 C works effectively where high brand recognition, contrast, or emphasis are desired, especially on display elements, signage, and branded installations. Due to its darkness and high saturation, additional coats may be required for uniform coverage, particularly over pale or uneven substrates. The perceived color can shift visibly in different lighting environments and can be affected by the selected paint finish; sampling in the target context is strongly advised. Compare with similar deep blues for desired temperature and chromaticity, as small variations can impact perceived fit for brand or environmental needs.

Similar colors:
PMS 2747 C – Slightly darker and deeper, reading as more muted in applications where maximum contrast is needed.

PMS 294 C – Noticeably lighter and less saturated, producing a more moderate visual effect.

PMS 281 C – Cooler and somewhat less vivid, offering a more neutral, formal look.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 2146 C

What should I know about matching Pantone PMS 2146 C across different materials and finishes?

Pantone PMS 2146 C is a vivid, deep blue that can present challenges when reproducing it precisely across various paint formats, materials, and finishes. Because PMS 2146 C is highly saturated and very dark, small differences in substrate, product chemistry, or sheen can cause visible color shifts. MyPerfectColor specializes in matching Pantone standards, but some variation is possible due to inherent differences between printing inks and mixed paints. For critical brand-facing uses, order a sample or test panel on your specific material and evaluate under the intended lighting to confirm acceptance.

Where can I find the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for paint made in Pantone PMS 2146 C?

The Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for paint produced in Pantone PMS 2146 C depends on the specific paint product and type you select, not the color. After choosing your paint format and product options, you can access the correct SDS from the SDS library linked on the product page or by searching for the product name. If you have questions about SDS availability for a specific format, contact MyPerfectColor customer support with your product details.

How do lighting and viewing conditions affect how Pantone PMS 2146 C appears?

Pantone PMS 2146 C is highly sensitive to lighting because of its deep, saturated blue tone and low light reflectance. Different light sources, such as sunlight, fluorescent, or LED, can cause the perceived color to shift in brightness and temperature. For accurate results, always evaluate paint samples for PMS 2146 C in the exact lighting and environment where the finished project will be seen. Confirm approval in those conditions before moving forward with large-scale production or installation.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 2146 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
