PMS 281 C is part of the Pantone PMS (Pantone Matching System) collection, which functions as an industry standard for brand and marketing color specification. This color reads as strong, corporate, technical, and professional with a distinctive gravitas well suited for visual branding in environments where clarity and consistency are priorities.
PMS 281 C appears very dark, with a low reflectance value (LRV: 1.91). The color conveys a cool temperature. PMS 281 C delivers a high degree of saturation, producing a rich, unmistakable blue. The undertone is subtly violet, giving depth and complexity under varied lighting. The color can exhibit perceptible variation depending on finish; higher gloss finishes may increase perceived depth, while matte finishes may mute the saturation. Accurate appearance relies on viewing the color in intended lighting conditions, especially for branding applications.
PMS 281 C is frequently associated with corporate branding, especially for educational and financial institutions. This color is often used for uniforms, signage, and environmental graphics where a formal, dependable image is required.
PMS 281 C works well in applications where a strong, corporate blue is needed for consistent branding or identity purposes. Its very low light reflectance calls for special attention to application over primed or light-colored bases to achieve true depth and opacity; insufficient coverage may cause the substrate to dull the vividness. The color’s coolness and violet undertone can shift subtly based on surrounding lighting and material finish, so painted samples should always be judged in situ prior to approval for brand-critical installations. High-gloss or semi-gloss finishes intensify color depth, while matte finishes will soften visual impact.

To achieve brand consistency with PMS 281 C in prototypes or concept models, choose a paint format that closely matches your production process, such as spray paint, paint pens, or brush-in-cap bottles. Before full production, apply the color to a test piece using the expected substrate and finish, and view it under the intended lighting conditions. Since PMS 281 C is highly saturated and has a low reflectance value, ensure adequate coverage and use a quality primer if needed. Evaluate the dried sample visually to confirm alignment with your brand requirements before approving for larger projects.
When using PMS 281 C on plastics or low-energy surfaces, proper preparation is essential. Most plastics require cleaning and sometimes scuffing to ensure adhesion. Some types may also need a specialized plastic primer. Always test PMS 281 C on the actual plastic substrate to check adhesion and color outcome before full-scale use. Paint performance can vary by plastic type, so confirm results meet visual and durability goals in your environment.
The durability of PMS 281 C spray paint depends on several factors, including substrate preparation, paint chemistry, and environmental exposure. For best results, clean and prime the surface as recommended for your material. To maximize durability, consider a compatible clear topcoat if the surface will be exposed to handling or weather. PMS 281 C is a rich, dark blue, so proper coverage and finishing help maintain long-term appearance and color consistency for brand-facing projects.
For metal or powder-coated parts, surface preparation is key to achieving good color uniformity with PMS 281 C. Clean the surface thoroughly to remove oils or residues, and lightly scuff glossy or powder-coated finishes for better adhesion. The color appearance of PMS 281 C may be affected by the underlying finish and substrate, so always test a sample and review in the intended lighting before proceeding with your final application.
Unfortunately, no.
Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.
The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 281 C in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
