PMS 7688 C is a standardized color in the Pantone Matching System (Pantone PMS collection), characterized by a bold, professional blue appearance. The color conveys a sense of stability, clarity, and assertiveness, and is perceived as modern, energetic, and technical. It is frequently selected for brand identity and public-facing installations where color-critical consistency is a priority.

PMS 7688 C has a medium-light visual weight (LRV 32.76). The color leans cool, with a blue base and minimal warmth. The saturation is high, producing a noticeably vivid and clean chromatic impression. PMS 7688 C displays a strong blue undertone without significant green or purple influence. The color’s visual appearance may shift notably depending on the finish gloss: higher gloss increases intensity, while matte finishes slightly mute the saturation.

PMS 7688 C performs well in environments that call for bold visual identification and consistent brand presence, particularly on smooth, prepared surfaces under controlled lighting. Users should verify appearance under intended lighting conditions, as both light quality and surface finish can influence perceived brightness and saturation. Compared to similar saturated blues, PMS 7688 C maintains a balance of vividness without skewing excessively dark or purple, making it operationally versatile for brand-focused applications.

Similar colors:

  • PMS 7690 C – Slightly darker and less chromatic, resulting in a more subdued blue presence.
  • PMS 7687 C – Similar hue but deeper and more intense, reading noticeably darker in most finishes.
  • PMS 2935 C – Cooler, more vibrant, and lighter, with a pronounced energetic character.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 7688 C

Why can Pantone PMS 7688 C not be reliably converted to other paint brand colors?

Pantone PMS 7688 C is defined by the Pantone Matching System as a specific color target for brand consistency. Most paint companies create their own palettes, and the formulas behind their branded colors are unique. Because PMS 7688 C is a vivid and saturated blue, other brands rarely offer an official equivalent. Attempting to cross-reference usually leads to visual differences, especially in finish and undertone. If you need PMS 7688 C specifically for brand or marketing use, order by the Pantone code to ensure you are targeting the correct standard instead of trying to match another brand's color chart.

What should I consider when applying Pantone PMS 7688 C paint to metal or powder-coated parts?

When using PMS 7688 C on metal or over a powder-coated surface, surface preparation is critical. Any glossy or existing coatings should be lightly scuffed and thoroughly cleaned to promote adhesion and achieve even color. The gloss level of the underlying layer can affect how vibrant or muted PMS 7688 C looks in the final result. Differences in prep, substrate, or gloss may cause the color to appear slightly different than on a Pantone reference. For best results, it is recommended to evaluate a sample on your actual material and under the lighting conditions of the finished project before proceeding with a full order.

Why does Pantone PMS 7688 C sometimes look different across materials and substrates?

The appearance of PMS 7688 C can change noticeably depending on the surface it is applied to. Factors such as substrate absorption, surface texture, and reflectivity all affect how you perceive this vivid blue. For example, a smooth metal panel may show the color more intensely than an absorbent or textured material. To achieve true brand consistency, it is good practice to test PMS 7688 C on the final material before moving forward, especially when a project involves multiple substrates or finishes.

How do undercoats and multiple coats affect PMS 7688 C coverage and appearance?

Since PMS 7688 C is a highly saturated blue, it may not fully cover contrasting substrates in a single coat. Planning for multiple coats is often necessary to achieve uniform color, especially over light or uneven surfaces. Using a recommended undercoat or primer will help the blue appear bolder and more consistent, reducing the risk of show-through or unevenness. This approach supports a more reliable brand appearance, especially when precise visual impact is important for displays or branded environments.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 7688 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

How do I convert PMS 7688 C to a different color from another paint company?

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 7688 C in paint, we don't provide any crossover information.
