PMS Black 7 C from the Pantone PMS collection is a nearly-black with distinct brown undertones, often described as muted, grounded, and understated. This color projects a technical, stable, and low-profile appearance with a subtle warmth. With an LRV of 3.52, it produces a very low-reflectance, nearly-opaque effect, making it optimal for applications requiring a deep, non-reflective dark with less visual harshness than conventional black.

PMS Black 7 C exhibits very low light reflectance, appearing almost fully opaque in most lighting. The color presents a cool-neutral tendency when compared to warm browns, but it is distinctly warmer than a standard jet black. This color displays desaturated, earthy qualities rather than a vivid or pure black, resulting in a subtle, muted appearance. The undertone is recognizably brown, especially evident in high-chroma lighting or at large scales. PMS Black 7 C is moderately sensitive to finish selection; matte and low-gloss finishes enhance its subdued quality, while higher sheens can accentuate the brown undertone.

PMS Black 7 C is suited for environments or objects where a standard black would appear too stark, such as softer branded elements, display accents, or industrial design details requiring depth without visual severity. It maintains a low profile and absorbs light effectively, making it useful for minimizing glare or visual distraction. When specifying this color, review samples in the intended finish and lighting to confirm undertone visibility. Compared to other near-black colors, it reads warmer and more muted, with more pronounced earthy qualities that may shift depending on gloss and material.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS Black 7 C

What should I know about matching Pantone PMS Black 7 C accurately in paint and coatings?

Pantone PMS Black 7 C is a nearly black color with a distinct brown undertone, which can behave differently depending on the material and finish. MyPerfectColor is an official Pantone licensee and uses precise processes to match Pantone colors as closely as possible using paint and coatings. However, since Pantone references are targets for color consistency across various materials, slight visual variation is possible due to factors like substrate, lighting, and finish. If exact visual alignment is critical for your brand project, reviewing a sample of PMS Black 7 C in the chosen paint type and finish under your application lighting is recommended before full production.

Should I choose a matte or gloss finish when ordering Pantone PMS Black 7 C for my display or branding application?

The finish you select for Pantone PMS Black 7 C will influence both appearance and visual impact. Matte and low-gloss finishes absorb more light and minimize glare, enhancing the muted, low-profile effect of this color. Glossy finishes add more visual punch and can make the brown undertone more noticeable, especially under strong lighting. For display fabrication or branded environments where glare is a concern or subtlety is preferred, matte may be the better choice. In settings where richness or light reflection is desired, gloss can be considered. Always evaluate samples in the intended finish and lighting to confirm the best result for your project.

How should I evaluate a sample of PMS Black 7 C to ensure it matches my Pantone color expectation?

For accurate comparison of PMS Black 7 C samples to your Pantone target, use the same lighting conditions and substrate as your final application. Allow the paint or coating to fully dry and cure, as the undertone and depth of PMS Black 7 C can shift during this process. Compare samples side by side with the official Pantone standard under consistent lighting for the most reliable assessment. For projects with strict brand standards, formally approved samples are recommended before production.

What is the process for ordering paint matched to Pantone PMS Black 7 C on MyPerfectColor?

To order paint matched to Pantone PMS Black 7 C, select the paint type and sheen that suits your branding or display needs, choose the quantity required, and review available options such as spray paint, paint pens, brush-in-cap bottles, or other formats. Ensure that your selection matches your intended substrate and finish requirement. If you are unsure about the best format or finish for PMS Black 7 C, requesting a sample first is a practical way to verify appearance before placing a full order.

Can I use the Pantone PMS Black 7 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
