PMS 731 C (Pantone Matching System / Pantone PMS) is a dark, saturated brown with a subtle golden undertone. The color conveys an earthy, grounded, and technical character, often perceived as mature, stable, and understated. Its low light reflectance value reflects a deep and strong visual presence, making it suitable for branding environments where durability and seriousness are emphasized.
PMS 731 C has a distinctly dark appearance, with a low light reflectance value (LRV 8.01) indicating very limited reflectivity and high visual weight. The color exhibits a warm tendency, with a golden-brown undertone that can appear slightly rich or toasted depending on lighting conditions. PMS 731 C is highly saturated, yielding a strong and memorable brown tone. The undertone is subtly yellow-gold, providing warmth without red dominance. This color can be finish-sensitive; gloss or high-sheen finishes may enhance warmth and apparent richness, while matte finishes can subdue its depth, potentially making it appear even darker.
PMS 731 C is often used in brand palette elements where a robust, organic brown is specified for packaging, signage, point-of-purchase displays, or visual design requiring an earthy, mature accent. The color can be found in applications where a connection to wood, earth, or natural strength is referenced for sensory or experiential branding.
PMS 731 C is best considered in branding, display, or design projects where a rich, earthy brown is required for visual weight or a natural connection. When specifying this color, confirm suitability in the intended lighting—warmer lights enhance its golden undertone, while cooler lighting can make it appear more neutral-brown. The depth and coverage may vary by substrate and finish; higher-gloss finishes will intensify warmth, while matte finishes can give an even more muted effect. Compared to other browns in the PMS system, it maintains a warmer, more golden undertone and is among the darkest browns available, providing significant visual anchoring in layouts.
This Pantone PMS color is defined by the Pantone Matching System standard. Evaluate the color using a physical Pantone reference and a real paint sample in the intended lighting and finish. Paint appearance varies by finish and lighting.

Safety guidance for using PMS 731 C depends on the specific paint product and format you choose. Always read the product label and consult the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for information about ventilation, protective equipment, and VOC content. Follow all recommendations for application and safe handling. Especially with spray paint or industrial coatings, use appropriate respiratory protection and ensure adequate ventilation during and after application. When in doubt, check the SDS for the exact product you plan to use.
For PMS 731 C, which is a dark, saturated brown, plan your application to prevent visible patchiness or uneven coverage. Consistently mix the paint, use a uniform application technique, and maintain a wet edge when working over large surfaces. Because highly saturated browns can have lower hide, expect to apply at least two full coats and allow each layer to dry as directed. Check the results under the actual lighting you will use. Test a sample board first to confirm appearance and coverage before starting your main project.
Yes, the finish selected can significantly impact how PMS 731 C appears. Matte finishes can make the color look deeper and less vibrant, while gloss or high-sheen finishes enhance warmth and make the color appear richer and brighter. When matching brand standards, always review physical samples in both the intended finish and lighting, because the same color code can appear different if the sheen changes. Decide on finish before ordering to avoid unexpected differences.
When using PMS 731 C on plastic or low-energy surfaces, proper adhesion is critical for appearance and durability. Plastics vary in how well they accept paint, and many require a specialty primer or surface preparation step. Always test your PMS 731 C paint on a representative area of the actual material before committing to production. Confirm adhesion and appearance in the intended finish and lighting, and follow the paint manufacturer's recommendations for surface prep and primer selection.
Unfortunately, no.
Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.
The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 731 C in paint, we don't provide any crossover information.
