PMS 628 C, from the Pantone PMS collection, is characterized by a light and subtle presence with a cool and restrained vibe. It is widely used in contexts requiring a calm, professional, and contemporary feel. This color suggests clarity and understated refinement, with a distinctly modern, technical, and approachable visual profile.

PMS 628 C presents as a light blue with a comparatively high light reflectance value (LRV 72.07). The color is cool-toned, with a perceptibly blue undertone and no evident warmth. Saturation is moderate, delivering clear chroma without being overly vivid or bold. The undertone is clean, and the color remains crisp and true under a variety of lighting conditions. Finish sensitivity is present; higher-gloss finishes can increase apparent brightness and slight texture, while matte finishes can mute its crispness.

PMS 628 C works well when a subtle, modern blue is needed for brand, display, or architectural settings where clarity and a cool atmosphere are preferred. Care must be taken in environments with warm or low lighting, as the color may appear more muted or less distinct. Light surface preparation is important to maintain evenness, as lighter colors can draw attention to imperfections. Compared to similar blues, PMS 628 C offers less visual weight and a softer effect, making it less likely to overwhelm other elements in a space or design.

Similar colors:
PMS 629 C – Lighter and even more muted, with less chromatic intensity.

PMS 297 C – Slightly brighter and more saturated, providing a stronger visual impact.

PMS 552 C – Cooler and paler, with a near-gray appearance for a more neutral effect.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 628 C

How does surface texture affect the appearance of Pantone PMS 628 C in brand or display applications?

Surface texture can have a significant impact on how PMS 628 C appears. A smooth, glossy surface will reflect more light and make this light blue color appear brighter and slightly more saturated. In contrast, matte or textured finishes scatter light and can make PMS 628 C look softer or more muted, sometimes appearing slightly darker. For projects where precise brand consistency is required, it is important to consider how texture and gloss will influence the final look and to approve samples under the actual lighting conditions and finish you plan to use.

What should I consider when applying PMS 628 C to plastic substrates or low-energy surfaces?

When using PMS 628 C on plastic or other low-surface-energy materials, adhesion can vary widely depending on the type of plastic. Many plastics require specific adhesion primers to ensure the paint adheres properly and delivers consistent color. Before full production or installation, always test the PMS 628 C paint system on your actual substrate to verify appearance and durability. For critical brand projects, confirming performance with samples is strongly recommended.

Are there challenges in matching PMS 628 C accurately across different materials and finishes?

Matching PMS 628 C precisely can be challenging, especially across different substrates and gloss levels. Although PMS 628 C is a moderate, cool blue, factors such as surface type, primer, and application process all influence the final appearance. MyPerfectColor specializes in producing visually accurate matches for branding and display, but slight variations can occur due to these factors. For projects requiring high visual accuracy, evaluating painted samples on your material and under actual lighting is the best way to confirm the match before full production.

What preparation is needed for painting metal or powder-coated parts in PMS 628 C?

To achieve a consistent result with PMS 628 C on metal or powder-coated surfaces, proper preparation is key. All surfaces should be clean, free from oil or dust, and lightly scuffed if possible to improve adhesion. The color and gloss of any existing coating may influence the final look of PMS 628 C. For important brand installations, apply and check a sample on the actual metal or coated part so that you can evaluate appearance and coverage before proceeding with the full project.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 628 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
