Yes, the finish or sheen can noticeably affect the way PMS 5285 C looks in your project. Higher-gloss finishes tend to make the color appear deeper and may increase the perception of saturation and brightness, while matte or flat finishes often give the color a softer and slightly lighter appearance. When comparing matte and gloss samples of PMS 5285 C, you may see what looks like a shift in color, even though the formula matches the Pantone reference. For consistent brand results, always specify both the color code and intended finish when ordering or evaluating samples.

When specifying PMS 5285 C for a project, it is important to match the paint type to the environment. For interior applications such as displays, signage, or wall elements, interior paints typically offer the needed durability and finish options. For exterior installations that are exposed to weather, choose a paint formulated for outdoor performance to protect against fading and moisture. Indicate the intended use when ordering PMS 5285 C to ensure the best results for brand consistency and durability in your application.

PMS 5285 C is a muted blue-violet with moderate chroma and a relatively low light reflectance value (LRV), so it may not be as demanding as highly saturated hues. However, for best color accuracy and uniform appearance, applying a suitable primer is recommended, especially over contrasting or uneven substrates. Additional coats may be needed for complete hide on porous or dark surfaces. Evaluating coverage with a sample in your actual conditions will help determine the exact number of coats needed.

PMS 5285 C is intended for projects where the Pantone reference is the target for new production, such as branded displays, signage, and marketing environments. For touch-up or repair of an existing surface, matching only the Pantone code may not produce a visually seamless result due to potential differences in substrate, aging, and finish. If you need touch-up-grade results, it is better to send a physical sample of your part for a custom match rather than relying solely on the PMS 5285 C code.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

The 11oz spray will cover about 20 square feet per coat. Keep in mind that it is difficult to gauge how much spray you'll need as it is highly dependent on how it is applied. It is better to have too much than run short.
