PMS 5255 C is a Pantone Matching System (PMS) standard used for producing consistent color across marketing, display fabrication, and industrial design projects. This color presents as dark, subdued, and distinctly cool-violet with a technical and mature vibe. It is widely selected for brand environments and situations where low reflectance and controlled color signal are operational priorities.
PMS 5255 C appears very dark; it has a notably low light reflectance value (LRV 2.3), meaning it absorbs most light. The color exhibits a cool tendency, rooted in its placement toward the blue-violet range of the spectrum. Saturation is moderate, providing a reserved yet definite chromatic identity without vivid intensity. The undertone leans toward blue, which reinforces its cool and subdued presence. The perceived darkness and undertone can be strongly influenced by lighting conditions and paint finish, making finish sensitivity relevant for application choices.
PMS 5255 C serves well where a sophisticated, muted brand presence is required, such as on signage, branded exhibits, and display components. Careful evaluation under actual install lighting is important, as this color can appear nearly black in low light but reveal more chroma in strong illumination or glossy finishes. Due to its intensity and low reflectance, surface preparation and uniform coating are critical to avoid patchiness, especially on large or high-visibility brand surfaces. Compared to other dark violets, PMS 5255 C will often show more blue and read less saturated, which can reduce visual noise in space-focused brand executions.
Similar colors:
PMS 2765 C – Similar but darker, with a more pronounced blue undertone and even lower perceived chroma.
PMS 267 C – Lighter and more saturated, appearing as a clearer and more chromatic violet.
PMS 525 C – Slightly warmer and more vibrant, offering a stronger purple hue with increased saturation.

Safety and VOC (volatile organic compound) requirements for PMS 5255 C depend entirely on the specific paint product and format selected, such as spray paint, epoxy, or housepaint. Always review the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for your chosen format and comply with all recommended handling, ventilation, and protection practices. Do not assume that all PMS 5255 C products have the same safety requirements, as formulations vary.
Sheen has a notable influence on the look of PMS 5255 C due to its dark, cool-violet character and low reflectance. Glossy finishes will make the color appear deeper and may reveal more chroma under bright light, while matte finishes will emphasize its subtlety and can make the color look almost black in low light. For brand displays or signage, select sheen based on viewing distance, surface type, and lighting conditions typical of your installation. Consider evaluating finish options with a physical sample if appearance under real-world lighting is critical.
The durability of PMS 5255 C spray paint depends on substrate preparation, the specific paint chemistry selected, and environmental exposure. For projects that require lasting performance, ensure surfaces are clean, primed as required, and consider using a compatible clear topcoat for extra protection. Indoor display and brand environments generally place fewer demands on the coating than exterior or high-traffic settings, so choose your spray paint formulation based on your specific exposure needs and maintenance cycle.
PMS 5255 C is a very dark color with moderate saturation, and it typically needs careful surface preparation for best results. Using a dark, uniform undercoat can help achieve even coverage and reduce the chance of patchiness, especially on larger or highly visible surfaces. Plan for at least two coats to reach full depth and uniformity. Testing a sample area is recommended to confirm ideal coverage for your substrate and application method.
Unfortunately, no.
Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.
The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

To make spray paint matched to Pantone PMS 5255 C. MyPerfectColor uses an acrylic enamel which is a fast-drying durable coating suitable for interior or exterior use. MyPerfectColor custom spray paint enables you to conveniently achieve a professional spray-smooth finish in any color in any sheen. It sticks well to most surfaces including metal, plastics, powder-coatings, cabinets and primed or previously painted wood.

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 5255 C in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
