PMS 462 C is part of the Pantone PMS system, a standardized palette widely used for branding, signage, industrial design, and marketing environments where accurate, consistent visual representation is critical. The color exhibits a muted, earthy, reserved, and functional vibe, appearing professional and unobtrusive in a variety of brand-driven applications.

PMS 462 C registers as a very dark color, supported by a low LRV of 5.84. The color reads as warm due to its brown base and yellow-oriented hue angle. Saturation is moderate, resulting in a strong but muted appearance that prevents the color from feeling harsh or overly chromatic. Undertones are distinctly brown with a subtle olive or muted yellow influence, contributing to an earthy effect. This color is sensitive to finish; gloss or high-sheen applications can visibly shift its perceived depth and warmth.

PMS 462 C performs best in brand systems and environments demanding a strong, understated background or accent, such as environmental graphics, signage, or display elements. It remains visually grounded under both natural and artificial light but can shift towards an even darker and slightly duller appearance in low-light settings. Surface preparation should ensure smoothness for uniformity, as uneven application or inconsistent finish can exaggerate dark color inconsistencies. Compared to other dark browns, PMS 462 C is less saturated and more muted, reducing the risk of red overtones and supporting a professional, grounded impression.

This Pantone PMS color is defined by the Pantone Matching System standard. Evaluate the color using a physical Pantone reference and a real paint sample in the intended lighting and finish. Paint appearance varies by finish and lighting.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 462 C

What are the best practices for comparing PMS 462 C samples during brand approval?

When evaluating PMS 462 C samples for brand or display approval, always compare samples under consistent lighting conditions and on the same substrate you plan to use. Ensure that all coatings are fully dry or cured before making a final decision, since color appearance can shift during drying. Using a physical Pantone reference for PMS 462 C is essential for visual accuracy, and observing multiple samples side by side will help confirm brand consistency.

How do I make sure I am ordering the correct color when I need PMS 462 C?

When ordering paint for PMS 462 C, always specify the exact Pantone code including the suffix 'C' to match the intended standard. The PMS code is a precise identifier used in branding and production, not just a name. Avoid using only the color name because similar names may exist in other Pantone ranges. Double-check project specifications to ensure you have the correct code and suffix before placing your order.

Should I plan for specific hide or undercoat strategies when painting with PMS 462 C?

PMS 462 C is a very dark, muted brown, but like many Pantone colors, coverage can vary by substrate and application method. For best results and uniform color, plan to use a compatible undercoat when painting over light or uneven surfaces and be prepared to apply multiple coats if full coverage is needed. Choosing the right undercoat supports color uniformity and helps achieve the professional, brand-consistent appearance required for PMS 462 C applications.

What is the preferred spray application method for PMS 462 C to achieve a consistent finish?

For PMS 462 C, apply several light coats of spray paint rather than one heavy coat. Allow each layer to dry or flash off before adding the next to prevent uneven coverage or runs, which are more noticeable with dark colors. This method helps achieve a smoother, more uniform brand appearance and reduces visible inconsistencies, especially for display and branded environments.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 462 C?

Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Can I use the Pantone PMS 462 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
