PMS 288 C is part of the Pantone PMS system, widely used in professional brand applications where precise color matching is essential. This color conveys a vibe that is strong, formal, reliable, and subdued, with a distinctly corporate and institutional feel. Its deep blue character and low reflectance make it a common choice for situations demanding clarity, visual seriousness, and brand alignment.

PMS 288 C appears very dark, with a low LRV of 2.99. The color leans cool, emphasizing a traditional blue hue. PMS 288 C demonstrates moderate to high saturation, yielding a vivid yet controlled appearance. The undertone is neutral to slightly violet, reinforcing the composed and professional effect. The color can be sensitive to finish and lighting: gloss finishes will deepen the visual impact, while matte can mute its vibrancy.

PMS 288 C is frequently associated with corporate identity systems and professional institutional branding. The color is often used for signage, branding elements, and trade show displays where visual authority and consistency are priorities.

PMS 288 C works well where a strong, professional blue is required and brand consistency is key, such as in identity signage, branded environments, and prototype models. Low reflectance and high saturation mean that the color may appear nearly black under lower lighting and can require careful lighting to maintain visible blue character. Coverage may require multiple coats, especially in lower-hide coatings or over lighter substrates. Differences in finish, such as gloss or matte, will meaningfully alter perceived depth and intensity, therefore material and environment mockups are recommended.

This Pantone PMS color is defined by the Pantone Matching System standard. Evaluate the color using a physical Pantone reference and a real paint sample in the intended lighting and finish. Paint appearance varies by finish and lighting.

Are there any noteworthy brand or institutional associations for Pantone PMS 288 C?

Pantone PMS 288 C is widely recognized as a core branding blue for the University of Oxford. When working with PMS 288 C, it is often chosen for environments where a strong, authoritative blue is required and brand consistency is essential.

How do I order paint matched to Pantone PMS 288 C on the MyPerfectColor site?

To order paint matched to PMS 288 C, first search for or navigate to the PMS 288 C color page. Then, select your preferred paint type, such as spray paint or other available formats. Choose the sheen (finish), quantity, and any other required options. Before placing your order, confirm all selections align with your brand requirements and display conditions. If coverage or substrate is a concern, review guidance or request additional support.

What should I know about matching Pantone PMS 288 C in paint?

Matching Pantone PMS 288 C in paint presents challenges because of its deep, saturated character and low reflectance. Reproduction may look almost black under low light, and finish or sheen can alter visual depth. MyPerfectColor specializes in producing visually accurate results, but appearance should always be checked using a physical Pantone reference and a sample in the intended finish and lighting. For mission-critical applications, material and environment mockups are strongly recommended.

Do I need to use a primer before applying paint matched to Pantone PMS 288 C?

The need for a primer when using PMS 288 C depends on the paint type, the substrate, and your application goals. Priming is recommended when painting over porous, light, or uncoated surfaces, and can improve coverage for this deep, low-hide blue. A primer is also advised for best adhesion on difficult surfaces. If you are unsure about your specific project, review substrate and primer guidelines or consult with a paint specialist to ensure optimal performance and appearance.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 288 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
