PMS 282 C, part of the Pantone PMS (Pantone Matching System) collection, is a deep, authoritative blue. It carries a professional, traditional, and understated visual vibe, often associated with reliability, seriousness, and formality. The color’s low light reflectance value means it appears nearly black in low lighting, providing a strong sense of visual weight and presence wherever used.

PMS 282 C exhibits very low lightness, with an LRV of 1.41, making it one of the darkest blues in the Pantone system. The color conveys a cool tendency, appearing distinctly blue rather than veering toward purple or green. The saturation level is moderate to high for such a dark color, resulting in vivid color retention even at low lightness. The undertone is purely blue with minimal visible contamination from other hues. The finish can affect appearance: matte sheens may further deepen its darkness, while higher gloss can emphasize its blue chroma.

PMS 282 C is frequently associated with uniforms and branded materials for collegiate athletics and university identities. The color is often used for legal, governmental, and institutional identity systems where a sense of tradition and stability is needed.

PMS 282 C works well when a professional, credible, and deeply saturated blue is needed for demanding visual environments, such as trade shows, displays, or branded architectural elements. Because it is so dark, careful attention should be paid to lighting: insufficient illumination can cause the color to read almost black, while strong directional light will reveal its subtle blue character. Surface preparation is critical on lighter substrates to ensure color uniformity, and multiple coats may be needed to achieve full coverage and proper depth without visible streaking. Compared to slightly lighter or more muted blues, PMS 282 C offers more gravitas and crispness, but less perceptible vibrancy in low light.

The following examples reflect commonly cited branding associations and are based on publicly referenced design usage; they are illustrative, not exhaustive or exclusive. PMS 282 C is widely cited as a core branding color for the United States Naval Academy. The color is commonly referenced in university branding, including by institutions such as Yale University and Pennsylvania State University. PMS 282 C is often used in corporate identity systems for financial, governmental, and professional service organizations seeking a sense of stability and tradition.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 282 C

How should I compare PMS 282 C paint to a Pantone book standard?

Pantone books show PMS 282 C as a reference on paper using a specific ink and finish. When you order PMS 282 C as paint, appearance can vary depending on the chosen sheen and the surface you are painting. Matte finishes may make PMS 282 C look even darker, while gloss can highlight its blue character. Always sample the paint on your actual project material and review it in your intended lighting to ensure the color looks right before moving to full production.

Should I sample PMS 282 C before full production for my branding project?

Sampling PMS 282 C is strongly recommended for any high-visibility brand project, large installation, or situation where color appearance is critical. The paint can look nearly black in low lighting or with some finishes, and the final result depends on both the substrate and the lighting in your environment. Ordering a sample helps confirm that PMS 282 C meets your expectations on your actual materials and under real project conditions.

Are there special coverage or hide considerations for PMS 282 C paint?

PMS 282 C is a deep, saturated blue with a very low LRV, which means it may require extra attention to achieve uniform coverage over lighter substrates. Multiple coats are often needed to avoid streaking or unevenness, especially on porous or high-contrast surfaces. For best results, use a primer that is appropriate for the underlying material and closely matches the final color value.

How do I order paint matched to PMS 282 C on MyPerfectColor?

To order paint matched to PMS 282 C, start by selecting the paint type that fits your project needs, such as spray paint or another available format. Next, choose your preferred sheen and the quantity required. Review your selections carefully before adding the product to your cart, as the correct format and finish are essential for achieving the intended color effect. If you need approval samples or have a specific application requirement, request a sample before placing a full order.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 282 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
