PMS 654 C (Pantone PMS collection) is a deep, cool-toned blue with minimal reflectance and strong visual presence. The color is recognized for its technical, authoritative, and understated character. It is frequently used when a design requires a serious, distinct, and consistent deep blue without appearing black. The low light reflectance and moderate chroma contribute to a solid, commanding vibe suitable for both digital and physical brand implementations.

PMS 654 C shows very low lightness; the LRV is 2.99, qualifying it as a very dark color. The color has a distinctly cool tendency, dominated by blue and violet hues. PMS 654 C reads as moderately saturated, supporting chromatic clarity despite its darkness. This color presents a subtle blue-violet undertone, especially visible under direct light or in high-gloss finishes. PMS 654 C can be finish-sensitive; higher gloss may increase perceived saturation, while matte finishes can mute the blue undertone, making it appear almost black.

PMS 654 C is frequently associated with branding for higher education, finance, and security sectors, when deep blue conveys trust and professionalism. The color is often used in institutional signage and environments requiring strong visual contrast with lighter branding elements.

PMS 654 C performs best when deep, professional visual impact is required, especially in environments where a serious blue tone must read clearly and consistently across different materials. Care should be taken to control lighting and finish, as low ambient light or matte surfaces can cause the color to lose some vibrancy and appear closer to black. Surface priming and adequate coverage are important due to its depth and potential for variable hide compared to lighter blues. The color maintains its uniquely blue identity relative to similar very dark colors, but can be visually affected by nearby whites or bright accent colors.

Similar colors:
PMS 295 C: Also a dark blue, but appears less violet and slightly lighter.

PMS 296 C: A similar deep blue, generally reads as cooler and marginally darker than PMS 654 C.

PMS 288 C: Noticeably lighter and more saturated, with more pronounced blue than PMS 654 C.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 654 C

How can I ensure consistent color results when reordering Pantone PMS 654 C paint?

For the most consistent results when reordering Pantone PMS 654 C, always specify the same paint type, sheen, and product format as your previous order. Color appearance can vary noticeably by sheen level and substrate, especially with a deep, low reflectance color like PMS 654 C. If formal brand approval is required, use the same reference sample or approval method for each run. Document finishes and any special application notes to aid future orders, reducing batch-to-batch variation in brand applications.

When do I need a primer for Pantone PMS 654 C matched paint?

Primer use for Pantone PMS 654 C depends on your substrate and the chosen paint type. A primer is recommended on bare surfaces, surfaces that have inconsistent color or texture, or whenever best adhesion and hide are needed. Dark colors like PMS 654 C may require a primer to ensure uniform color and reduce the number of coats, especially over light or porous materials. Check the product guidance for substrate-specific recommendations.

What is the best way to order the correct Pantone PMS 654 C color?

To order the correct shade, always use the full Pantone code 'PMS 654 C' as it appears in your brand standards or project specs. The code is the standardized way to identify the exact color target. Avoid ordering by color name alone, and include any suffixes such as C (Coated), U (Uncoated), or other identifiers as appropriate. This reduces the risk of receiving the wrong color version or finish.

How do I find the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) for paint in Pantone PMS 654 C?

The SDS for Pantone PMS 654 C paint depends on the type of paint or coating ordered, not just the color code. After selecting your desired product format (such as spray paint, epoxy, or housepaint), check the SDS library on the product page or request the SDS for the specific product type used for PMS 654 C. The color does not affect the safety data.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 654 C?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 654 C depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. We do our best to make sure you get your paint on time. Learn more about paint lead times at MyPerfectColor.
Can I use the Pantone PMS 654 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
