PMS 280 C is part of the Pantone PMS (Pantone Matching System) collection, designed for consistent color communication across diverse materials. This color conveys a vibe that is formal, reliable, authoritative, strong, and technical. It is a dark blue with a notably cool tone, commonly selected for applications where dependable visual consistency and brand presence are critical.
PMS 280 C displays a very dark appearance, with a low LRV of 2.3. The color is solidly cool-toned, maintaining a blue hue with no perceptible warmth. PMS 280 C shows medium to high chroma, lending noticeable saturation and boldness. The undertone remains distinctly blue, with no influence of green or purple. The color's depth can appear even more pronounced in matte finishes; gloss increases apparent brightness but does not shift its overall coolness.
PMS 280 C is often used in corporate identity systems for major institutions, universities, and athletic organizations. Widely cited as a base blue in financial services branding, sports team graphics, and event signage.
PMS 280 C works best when a deep, consistent blue is required for visual identity or branded display applications. Because of its low light reflectance, it may appear nearly black in low-light conditions, so lighting should be evaluated when specifying in built environments. Application over white or light neutral primers improves coverage and surface uniformity; multiple coats are sometimes necessary to achieve full visual opacity. This color stands out from other dark blues by its clearly cool, saturated tone—avoiding indigo, navy, or black-leaning qualities seen in similar entries.
This Pantone PMS color is defined by the Pantone Matching System standard. Evaluate the color using a physical Pantone reference and a real paint sample in the intended lighting and finish. Paint appearance varies by finish and lighting.

PMS 280 C is specified using the Pantone Matching System, which is a color communication standard, not a paint or finish recipe. Most paint brands use unique color palettes and proprietary formulas, so there is rarely a precise equivalent to PMS 280 C in other collections. Vivid colors like PMS 280 C are especially challenging to convert because small differences in pigments and finish can cause the appearance to shift. For the most accurate result, always specify PMS 280 C by its Pantone code and confirm against a physical Pantone reference along with a paint sample.
For PMS 280 C matched spray paint, apply several light coats rather than one heavy coat. Allow each layer enough time to dry or 'flash' before applying the next. This approach helps build up color evenly and reduces the risk of drips, uneven coverage, or gloss variation. For dark and highly saturated colors like PMS 280 C, using a white or light primer and allowing adequate dry time between thin coats helps achieve better visual consistency and coverage. Always test in your actual lighting and finish conditions.
When ordering PMS 280 C, always specify both the code 'PMS 280 C' and ensure any suffixes or series indicators are included. The code is the definitive standard for this color and avoids confusion with similar names or numbers. Relying only on a color name or a description can lead to mistakes, especially since many Pantone blues are visually close. Use your official brand guidelines and confirm with a physical Pantone formula guide when in doubt.
If you are unsure which type of paint to select for PMS 280 C, contact MyPerfectColor with details about your substrate, whether the project is for indoor or outdoor use, and your required finish (for example, matte or gloss). Sharing this information allows a recommendation that best supports brand consistency and practical performance. The right paint type can make a significant difference in achieving your visual and durability goals for PMS 280 C.
Unfortunately, no.
Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.
The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 280 C in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
