PMS 278 C is part of the Pantone PMS collection, a standardized color system widely used in branding and graphic arts. This color is frequently described as light, approachable, stable, technical, and orderly. Its position in the Pantone PMS system means it plays a key role in delivering color consistency across various printed, painted, and fabricated applications.
PMS 278 C appears light in value, with an LRV of 43.66 supporting its mid-range reflectance. The color exhibits a cool tendency, falling in the blue segment of the spectrum. PMS 278 C demonstrates moderate saturation, providing a visibly present but not overpowering blue. The undertone for PMS 278 C is a subtle, clean blue with very minimal violet or green influence. This color is moderately sensitive to finish; glossier surfaces can intensify perceived brightness and saturation.
PMS 278 C works well when a light blue is needed to convey clarity, openness, or technical reliability in branding and display settings. For best results, evaluate in the intended lighting and finish because perceived lightness and saturation will shift. It provides more atmosphere and subtlety than deeper or more chromatic blues, making it suitable for large areas or as a backdrop in multi-color identity schemes.
The following examples reflect commonly cited branding associations and are based on publicly referenced design usage; they are illustrative, not exhaustive or exclusive. Pantone PMS 278 C is frequently specified as a brand-standard target in sign, display, and exhibit fabrication. This ensures color consistency for brand-facing elements across various materials and production methods. It is important to remember that PMS 278 C is a standard reference, not a paint formula, so the achieved color may differ based on substrate, paint type, finish, and lighting. For high-visibility or critical brand installations, always sample PMS 278 C on the actual substrate and under the expected lighting conditions before final production.
The need for a primer with Pantone PMS 278 C depends on the substrate, paint formulation, and intended durability. Primer is often recommended for bare metals, plastics, unfinished wood, or surfaces with previous finishes that may interfere with adhesion or uniformity. Using the correct primer improves color accuracy, coverage, and long-term results. For guidance on substrate preparation and primer selection, review the instructions for your specific paint system or consult professional paint resources.
Pantone PMS 278 C is often used to communicate brand consistency in prototypes and concept models. Selecting the right paint format such as spray paint, paint pen, or brush-in-cap bottle allows you to match the production environment or model requirements. It is important to test PMS 278 C on the intended substrate and evaluate it under expected lighting and finish conditions, as perceived color can shift. Sampling helps confirm that your prototype aligns visually with brand specifications before moving to final production.
Pantone PMS 278 C is a light, moderately saturated blue and may require a thoughtful undercoat strategy, especially over dark substrates or uneven surfaces. For best results, apply a white or light neutral undercoat to promote uniform coverage and color accuracy. Plan for the possibility of multiple coats, especially when high visual consistency is needed for brand standards. Testing on a sample section helps identify the right number of coats and undercoat approach for your specific context.
Unfortunately, no.
Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.
The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 278 C in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
