PMS 290 C is part of the Pantone PMS (Pantone Matching System) collection, used widely for standardized color communication in branding, display fabrication, and industrial design. The color expresses a light, clean, and understated visual character, often described as soft, technical, and contemporary. With a high Light Reflectance Value (LRV) of 66.01, PMS 290 C projects a sense of clarity and approachability in its most common applications.

PMS 290 C appears light in tone; it has a high LRV of 66.01, indicating strong reflectance of light. The color leans distinctly cool due to its blue hue, with no perceptible warmth. It shows moderate chroma; the color is clear and noticeably blue, but not highly saturated or vivid. The undertone of PMS 290 C is clean blue without strong secondary hues or visible grayness. This color can be moderately sensitive to finish; gloss or semi-gloss finishes may enhance its clarity, while matte finishes can soften its appearance.

PMS 290 C is specified for projects where a light, neutral blue is required to convey clarity and a technical aesthetic. It performs effectively as a background or secondary color in environments where readability, clean contrast, or a non-dominant color statement is needed. Care should be taken with finish selection, as higher gloss levels may increase vibrancy and perceived saturation, while flat finishes may introduce a subdued appearance. Lighting conditions can shift its tone, with cool lighting reinforcing its blue cast and warm lighting subtly muting its technical sharpness. Users should evaluate the color in both finish and lighting similar to the final installation.

Similar colors:
PMS 291 C is a similar light blue but appears slightly more saturated and has a more pronounced blue undertone.

PMS 2707 C is lighter and cooler, with a lower chroma and a more pastel appearance.

PMS 278 C is a deeper, stronger blue, providing a slightly darker and richer effect than PMS 290 C.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 290 C

How does surface texture affect the appearance of Pantone PMS 290 C when used in branding or display projects?

The surface texture can noticeably change how Pantone PMS 290 C looks once applied. Smooth, glossy finishes tend to make PMS 290 C appear brighter and more saturated, while matte or textured finishes can soften the color and may make it appear lighter or less vibrant. Texture introduces small shadows and variations in how light is reflected, which impacts the clarity and technical look often associated with this color. Evaluate color samples on the intended substrate and finish to ensure visual alignment with brand expectations.

What should I expect when comparing Pantone PMS 290 C paint to a Pantone guide or book?

Pantone books serve as color reference standards printed on specific substrates with defined finishes. When ordering Pantone PMS 290 C as paint, be aware that appearance can differ due to various factors like sheen, substrate, and application method. It is important to test painted samples of PMS 290 C on your actual material and under realistic lighting conditions before final use, especially for branded environments or critical display work.

What should I consider when applying Pantone PMS 290 C to metal or previously powder-coated surfaces?

For Pantone PMS 290 C on metal or powder-coated parts, careful surface prep is essential. Clean and scuff the surface to promote adhesion and ensure a uniform finish. Be aware that the gloss level of the existing coating, as well as any surface irregularities, can influence how PMS 290 C looks. Sample the color on a prepared substrate to confirm that the final appearance meets branding requirements before moving forward with production.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 290 C?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 290 C depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. Can I use the Pantone PMS 290 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 290 C in paint, we don't provide any crossover information.
