PMS 276 C is part of the Pantone PMS collection, a global standard for color communication in branding, marketing, and industrial design. The color is visually associated with being deep, muted, and formal. It leans toward a cool hue, with restrained chroma, and is often considered serious, stable, and understated in environments requiring color consistency and visual impact.

PMS 276 C presents as very dark in appearance (LRV 1.56). The color has a cool bias, with a purple-violet base. PMS 276 C shows moderate chroma; it is noticeably colored but not overly vivid. There is a subtle blue undertone, which reinforces its cool and composed quality. The appearance of PMS 276 C is sensitive to finish; gloss can slightly intensify saturation while matte finishes further subdue its depth. Lighting has a significant impact on the perception of color depth and undertone, especially in artificial or low-light settings.

PMS 276 C is typically used where a deep, corporate purple is required for consistent brand expression across physical displays, environmental graphics, or fabricated elements. It is effective in settings that benefit from a subdued, assertive, and professional color. Users should be aware that its low reflectance means the color may appear almost black in dim lighting or when applied in a matte finish. Surface preparation and priming are important to prevent unevenness, as the dark tone will make imperfections more noticeable. Compared to similar dark purples, PMS 276 C tends to read cooler and less red, offering greater neutrality in branded environments.

This Pantone PMS color is defined by the Pantone Matching System standard. Evaluate the color using a physical Pantone reference and a real paint sample in the intended lighting and finish. Paint appearance varies by finish and lighting.

PMS 268 C is a lighter and slightly more chromatic purple, reading warmer and more vibrant in comparison.

PMS 275 C is also deep and purple but exhibits a softer, less blue-leaning undertone.

PMS 282 C is a similarly dark color but shifts toward a navy blue, making it cooler and less obviously purple.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 276 C

What should I expect when comparing PMS 276 C paint to the color in my Pantone book?

The color PMS 276 C in a Pantone book sets the reference standard for the target appearance, but the final look of PMS 276 C paint is influenced by the specific finish (such as gloss or matte), the substrate, and the lighting. A Pantone book typically shows color as printed ink on coated paper. Paint applied to real materials may differ in gloss, depth, and undertone. Always compare a physical paint sample of PMS 276 C, made on your actual material and finish, against your Pantone book under the lighting where the project will be viewed before final approval or production.

Can I use PMS 276 C for both interior and exterior projects, and how do I choose the right paint type?

PMS 276 C can be ordered in paint types formulated for either interior or exterior use. For indoor spaces or brand displays not exposed to weather, select an interior paint or a paint designed for controlled environments. For outdoor projects or anything exposed to sun, rain, or fluctuating temperatures, choose exterior-grade paint for better durability. Indicate your project environment when ordering so you receive a finish appropriate for your intended use. Always evaluate PMS 276 C on a sample panel first to confirm color and appearance in the context it will be used.

How does lighting affect the way PMS 276 C appears in paint?

The appearance of PMS 276 C paint can shift noticeably under different lighting conditions. Because this color is very dark with a cool purple base, it may look almost black in dim or yellow-toned lighting, and its blue undertone may become more noticeable under cooler, white-balanced light. Always test a sample of PMS 276 C in the lighting conditions where it will be displayed to ensure the color meets your expectations for brand consistency and visual impact.

What should I do to maintain uniform color when applying PMS 276 C over large surfaces?

For large-area applications of PMS 276 C, plan for consistent surface prep and application technique. This color is very dark, so any surface imperfections or uneven coverage may be more visible. Apply an appropriate primer, use the same type of roller or sprayer throughout, and maintain a wet edge to avoid lap marks. When possible, batch your paint to ensure consistency, and review the area from multiple angles and under different lighting after each coat to catch any inconsistencies early.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 276 C?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 276 C depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. Can I use the Pantone PMS 276 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

Most people don't use a primer for a touch up paint application, but a primer may improve adhesion and is typically recommended for exterior applications.
How do I convert PMS 276 C to a different color from another paint company?

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 276 C in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
