PMS 2617 C is a Pantone Matching System (PMS) color used widely in brand and identity systems. It is recognized as a very dark purple with high chroma and low reflectance, creating a bold and commanding appearance. The character of this color can be described as intense, assertive, technical, corporate, and modern, making it suitable for applications where strong color integrity and visibility are required.

PMS 2617 C exhibits a very dark appearance with an LRV of 2.75.

The color has a cool tendency, with a purple hue that leans distinctly toward blue-violet.

This color features high saturation and chroma, producing a vivid, striking effect.

The undertone is relatively blue, which can enhance a sense of depth and modernity.

The color may be sensitive to finish; matte and gloss applications can influence its apparent richness and reflectance.

PMS 2617 C performs best where strong branding or differentiated visual elements are needed, such as in signage, identity, or marketing installations. Due to its low light reflectance, it can appear even darker in dim or uneven lighting. When specifying or applying this color, consider the lighting environment and finish; glossy finishes may intensify vibrancy, while flats or mattes may make it appear slightly muted. This color may require multiple coats for full coverage, especially over light or uneven substrates, and meticulous surface preparation is recommended for uniform results. PMS 2617 C behaves as a strong, saturated dark purple relative to other PMS purples, maintaining coolness and clarity without veering toward muddiness or brown tones.

Similar colors:

  • PMS 268 C – Slightly lighter and more chromatic, with a more vivid purple-blue impression.
  • PMS 2695 C – Similar depth but with a warmer, more muted undertone.
  • PMS 2627 C – Shares darkness but is less saturated and reads as a softer, more neutral violet.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 2617 C

What does it mean to order paint matched to Pantone PMS 2617 C?

When you order paint matched to Pantone PMS 2617 C, you are requesting a paint product formulated to visually replicate the standardized PMS 2617 C color target. The Pantone PMS code is a visual reference standard, not a specific chemical formula, coating process, or finish type. Color may vary depending on material, application method, and finish. For branded environments and displays where the PMS color is the required reference, this method is generally accepted, but always confirm if your project requires an approval process or physical sample.

Do I need a primer when using Pantone PMS 2617 C paint for brand or display applications?

You may need a primer when painting with PMS 2617 C depending on the substrate, paint type, and desired performance. This color is highly saturated and has a very low light reflectance value, so priming light or uneven surfaces helps with uniform coverage and adhesion. Using a primer is especially important for raw, absorbent, or previously uncoated materials. Always review substrate requirements and paint selection for your project. If you are unsure, consult the paint manufacturer's primer recommendations for optimal results.

How can I accurately compare paint samples of PMS 2617 C during a color approval process?

To compare PMS 2617 C paint samples for approval, use consistent lighting and the same substrate for all samples. Allow coatings to fully dry or cure before evaluating the color, as appearance may shift while drying. Evaluate samples side by side against the Pantone reference under the actual lighting conditions where they will be used. Remember that finish and sheen may affect the perceived color, so match the finish type to what is specified in your standards or project requirements.

Can I use Pantone PMS 2617 C paint for touch-up or should I send a part for matching?

Pantone PMS 2617 C paint is intended to reproduce the visual standard for branded displays and marketing environments. If you require touch-up results on previously coated items, especially when matching unknown finishes or custom blends, it is best to send a physical part for matching. Pantone matching supports brand color reproduction but may not align precisely with touch-up needs on existing surfaces.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 2617 C?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 2617 C depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. We do our best to make sure you get your paint on time. Learn more about paint lead times at MyPerfectColor.
Can I use the Pantone PMS 2617 C for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

How do I convert PMS 2617 C to a different color from another paint company?
