PMS 178 C, from the Pantone PMS System / collection, is a saturated and vibrant color with a warm, energetic vibe. It is frequently described as bold, lively, and attention-grabbing, and is operationally valued in branded environments and marketing installations for its ability to stand out and convey enthusiasm. The color’s overall effect is assertive but approachable, often characterized as youthful, dynamic, and modern.
PMS 178 C presents as a medium-light color, consistent with an LRV of 31.59, offering noticeable brightness without being pastel. The color leans distinctly warm, with a pronounced coral-red tone that lends a sense of energy. This color maintains a high level of chroma, making it especially saturated and visually prominent. The underlying undertone of PMS 178 C is an orange-coral influence, setting it apart from cooler reds or more neutral tints. The perception of saturation and vibrancy can be significantly affected by finish and lighting; gloss finishes intensify its brightness, while matte may subdue its impact.
PMS 178 C works well where high visibility and brand recognition are important, such as in retail displays, event activations, and branded signage. When utilized in highly saturated paint colors like this, consider the possible need for multiple coats to achieve full coverage, especially over contrasting substrates. Illumination strongly affects the color’s appearance; direct or cool lighting can amplify its coral qualities, while low or warm light may shift it towards a deeper, softer red. Compared to similar saturated reds, PMS 178 C stands out for its distinct coral warmth and moderate lightness, avoiding the overpowering darkness of deeper reds or the subtlety of more muted pinks.
Similar colors:
PMS 1787 C: Slightly darker and more intense, with a deeper, less coral-centered red tone.
PMS 485 C: More neutral and classic red, with less coral influence and a colder appearance.
PMS 170 C: Lighter and less saturated, creating a softer, more subdued effect relative to PMS 178 C.

PMS 178 C is a highly saturated coral-red and may require additional coats to achieve uniform coverage, especially over contrasting base colors or when applied in lighter paint formats. Plan for the possibility of multiple coats to reach the intended visual impact. This helps ensure the color's vibrancy and consistency meet brand standards in displays, signage, and marketing installations.
For PMS 178 C, choose an interior paint if the project is for indoor environments such as tradeshow displays or retail fixtures, where exposure to weather is not a concern. Use an exterior-rated paint if the color will be exposed to sunlight, rain, or outdoor conditions, such as for signage or activations outside. Always match your substrate and exposure needs to the paint type offered to help maintain color consistency and durability as specified by your brand requirements.
Yes, PMS 178 C can appear noticeably different when applied in gloss versus matte finishes. Gloss finishes tend to intensify the brightness and saturation of the color, making it appear more vivid and dynamic. Matte finishes can subdue the color, making it seem softer or less saturated. When evaluating color matches for brand consistency, always compare samples in the intended finish and under typical lighting conditions to ensure your expectations align with the final appearance.
To order PMS 178 C paint on MyPerfectColor, first select the desired paint format (such as spray paint, paint pen, or house paint). Choose the required sheen (matte, semi-gloss, etc.) and specify the quantity needed. Confirm all project requirements before placing your order to help ensure you receive PMS 178 C in the format and finish that aligns with your brand and application needs.
Unfortunately, no.
Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.
The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 178 C in paint, we don't provide any crossover information. We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
