RAL 7038 Agate Grey Paint

Use this decision guide. RAL is a color target (RAL 7038) and does not define gloss, texture, or process.

• Standard RAL 7038 is typically sufficient when:
  • Acceptance will be judged against the RAL Classic 7038 standard (fan deck/chip) under controlled lighting, not against an existing part.
  • Repairs are low-criticality (small chips) or cross-material coordination where textures/sheens already differ.
  • Minor visual variation is acceptable and no formal inspection criteria are specified.
• Prefer a sample/OEM match when:
  • Acceptance will be side-by-side against an existing coated part or assembly.
  • The surface is high-visibility or the repaint area is large.
  • A known OEM powder coating code exists (provide manufacturer and code).
  • Texture or gloss must closely align with the installed coating. Note: liquid touch-up will not replicate textured powder.
• Risk notes for RAL 7038:
  • Sheen and texture strongly affect perceived hue; RAL 7038 has a subtle greenish cast that can shift visually with gloss/texture.
  • Powder vs liquid coatings can look different even at the same color target.
• If a custom match is needed, provide:
  • A flat, representative sample (at least 50 × 50 mm), unweathered if possible.
  • Desired gloss (e.g., GU @60 degrees) and whether acceptance is to your sample or the RAL 7038 standard.
  • Application method and substrate so the match can be optimized.

Document the order so acceptance and reorders are unambiguous:

• Color reference: "RAL Classic 7038 Agate Grey." State match type: "Match RAL standard" or "Match customer sample ID/OEM powder code."
• Finish: Gloss level (GU @60 degrees) and allowable tolerance; note texture requirement (smooth vs textured). Liquid touch-up will not recreate texture.
• Product and application: Coating chemistry/product family, application method (aerosol/spray/brush), thinning instructions (if any), and target dry film thickness.
• Substrate and system: Substrate type, primer specification (if used), and any required recoat/cure constraints relevant to your process.
• Acceptance criteria: Reference standard (RAL 7038 chip or your sample ID), viewing/lighting conditions, and whether visual or instrumental control is used. If you use a spectrophotometer, specify your Delta E tolerance and reference.
• Traceability: Supplier product code, batch/lot numbers, manufacture date, and a retain sample or drawdown kept with the job traveler.

Select based on defect size, visibility, and acceptance expectations:

• Touch-up pen: Hairline scratches, edge nicks, fasteners, and chips under ~1-2 mm. Good control with minimal overspray.
• Brush bottle: Isolated chips ~2-10 mm and small scuffs. Dab and level; suitable for low-criticality repairs.
• Aerosol spray: Larger chips, small panels, or many chips over a wider area. Enables blending across 6-24 inch zones. Choose the closest sheen to the existing surface.
• Important notes:
  • If bare metal is exposed, spot-prime with a compatible primer before color.
  • Textured powder-coated parts: Liquid touch-up (pen/brush/aerosol) matches color target but not texture; appearance may differ under inspection.
  • High-visibility repairs or panel repaints: Consider a sample/OEM-based match and specify gloss; perform a test area and allow full cure before evaluation.

However, keep in mind that our version of RAL7038 Agate Grey is based on the color swatch contained in the official RAL color book.
