• High-visibility cosmetic surfaces or large continuous areas will be repainted.
• Strict acceptance/inspection is expected against existing parts or prior lots.
• A known OEM powder code exists and must be followed.

To reduce risk, state on the PO whether acceptance is against the RAL 7022 standard or against a provided sample/OEM powder, specify gloss (60 degrees GU) and any texture, and agree on viewing conditions. If uncertain, submit a sample for a targeted match and approval panel before production.

Not necessarily. RAL 7022 specifies the color target, but powder coatings vary by brand, resin, texture, gloss, and batch. A liquid paint formulated to the RAL standard will align to the RAL reference, yet it may not be indistinguishable from a textured or different-gloss powder film.

To align outcomes and avoid rejection:

• Confirm acceptance: match to the RAL 7022 standard chip or match to your existing part.
• Provide the OEM powder brand/code and gloss, or send a sample part/panel.
• Specify the required gloss (60 degrees GU) and note any texture; color will appear different at different gloss levels.
• For field touch-up on textured powder, expect surface texture differences even when color is correct.

When cosmetic acceptance is strict, request a custom match to your sample or the OEM powder specification rather than relying solely on the generic RAL reference.

Typical planning values (smooth, non-porous substrates):

• 12 oz aerosol: about 20-25 sq ft per coat.
• Quart (brush/roll/spray): about 75-100 sq ft per coat.
• Gallon: about 300-400 sq ft per coat.

Key factors that change coverage and hide:

• Substrate and profile: rough/porous surfaces consume more material.
• Application method and overspray/transfer efficiency.
• Color change: RAL 7022 is a deep grey (LRV ~6.6) and generally hides efficiently; over white/bright primers plan 2 thin coats for uniformity.
• Finish: very high gloss and very low gloss can both require additional coats for even appearance.

Planning tip: calculate Area × coats using the nominal coverage above and add 10-20% for losses, edges, masking, and touch-up. If high build or specific DFT is required, adjust quantities accordingly.

Lighting spectrum changes the way colors appear (metamerism). RAL 7022 Umbra Grey is a near-neutral, low-chroma grey; small hue shifts can be more noticeable under different lamps (e.g., a slight green/brown cast under certain LEDs compared to daylight).

To control acceptance risk:

• Define inspection lighting in the spec/PO (e.g., D65 daylight or 5000K high-CRI LED) and use the same lighting for all evaluations.
• Assess samples at the intended viewing angle and compare against the same reference (RAL standard chip or an approved part).
• If matching an existing part, provide a sample and note the in-service lighting so the match can be optimized for that environment.

Also confirm gloss and surface texture, as these change perceived color even when the formula is constant.
