A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 37032 is a very dark, low-chroma charcoal gray with a slight cool blue cast. It reads close to black in low light, but it keeps a muted gray character instead of a clean black appearance.
This color is often used on spray-painted parts where a dark government reference is needed, including equipment panels, brackets, housings, enclosures, switch covers, cabinets, rails, carts, and fabricated hardware. MyPerfectColor custom spray paint matched to this reference can support maintenance touch-up, restoration, prototyping, and color-coding work on metal, plastic, or composite parts.
Because the color is so dark, surface texture, prep quality, and sheen can be easy to see after spraying. A smooth substrate and appropriate primer can help the finish read more evenly, and lighter or uneven bases may need additional coats for solid hiding. If you are matching an older in-service part, the standard reference may still differ from a faded or worn coating.
MyPerfectColor supplies paint matched to the selected Fed Standard or AMS-STD-595 reference, not an official government coating system. For acceptance-critical or specification-controlled work, compare the match against the project requirements and any approved sample or existing part before ordering.

About US Government Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 Colors. Fed-Std-595C / FED STD 595 Colors
The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.
We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]
The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.
The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
1 = gloss
2 = semi gloss
3 = matt
The second digit indicates the color group;
0 = Brown 5 = Blue
1 = Red 6 = Grey
2 = Orange 7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
3 = Yellow 8 = Fluorescent
4 = Green
The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.
While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.
Frequently Asked Questions About Match of US Government™ AMS-STD-595 37032 *
What does AMS-STD-595 37032 tell me when ordering paint?
AMS-STD-595 37032 identifies a color reference target only. Use it to order a MyPerfectColor paint match to that government color standard, but choose the product chemistry, sheen, surface preparation, and coating system separately for your project.
The code by itself does not make the paint an official government-issued coating system, and it does not guarantee approval for a specific compliance requirement.
Will AMS-STD-595 37032 match an older painted part during touch-up?
It may match the standard reference, but an older in-service coating can look different because of fade, weathering, sheen change, texture, or previous coating differences.
If you are repairing next to an existing finish, test on the actual part first if possible. For acceptance-critical work, a sample panel or an existing-part match may be a better choice than relying on the standard code alone.
How should I plan dry time and recoating for AMS-STD-595 37032?
Plan around the specific MyPerfectColor product you order, not the color code itself. Dry-to-touch, recoat window, and full cure are separate stages, and the timing can vary by format such as spray paint or touch-up paint.
Check the product instructions before handling the part or applying another coat, and allow full cure before putting the part back into service if that matters for your job.
Do SDS and product data for AMS-STD-595 37032 come from the color code?
No. A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 37032 is the color reference only. SDS, technical data, and application information belong to the specific MyPerfectColor product and chemistry you order.
If you need paperwork for procurement or job records, keep the documentation for the exact product purchased along with the color reference you selected.
What surface prep should I use before applying AMS-STD-595 37032 to metal or an existing coating?
Clean the surface, remove oil and contaminants, and make sure the substrate is sound before painting. On metal, inspect for rust or corrosion and address it before coating.
On existing finishes, scuff for adhesion if the substrate and project allow it, then test a small area first. Primer choice depends on the material and condition of the part, so confirm the prep method for your specific substrate before starting a full application.
