A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 37031 reads as a very dark charcoal gray, close to black, with a low-chroma, near-neutral appearance and very little visible color cast. Its low LRV means it will look deep and dense rather than light or reflective.
For Fed Standard 595C and AMS-STD-595 work, MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint is used when the specification calls for this reference and the goal is a match to the standard, not an official government coating system. That makes it a practical ordering choice for maintenance, fabrication, and prototyping jobs where the color code is the target.
MyPerfectColor spray paint in this color can be used on panels, brackets, enclosures, housings, switch covers, hardware, rails, and other small parts that need to read as the specified dark government gray. It is also suited to color-coding tools, fixtures, and fabricated components where a deep neutral finish is easier to keep consistent across multiple substrates.
Because the color is so dark, surface condition, sheen, and film build can affect how it reads after application. Small texture differences, thin coverage, or a lighter primer can show through more readily, and a match to the standard chip may still differ from an older, weathered, or sun-faded part. For acceptance-sensitive touch-up work, a sample or part-based check is often worth considering.

About US Government Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 Colors. Fed-Std-595C / FED STD 595 Colors
The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.
We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]
The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.
The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
1 = gloss
2 = semi gloss
3 = matt
The second digit indicates the color group;
0 = Brown 5 = Blue
1 = Red 6 = Grey
2 = Orange 7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
3 = Yellow 8 = Fluorescent
4 = Green
The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.
While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.
Frequently Asked Questions About Match of US Government™ AMS-STD-595 37031 *
What does AMS-STD-595 37031 mean, and does it define the full coating system?
A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 37031 is a color reference target. It tells you which government standard color to match, but it does not by itself define the paint chemistry, gloss level, surface preparation, corrosion protection, application method, or formal approval status.
If your project requires a specific coating system or acceptance rule, confirm those requirements separately before ordering.
Will AMS-STD-595 37031 match an older coated part, or is it only a standard color match?
A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 37031 is a match to the standard reference, not a guarantee that it will visually blend with an aged in-service coating. Weathering, fade, sheen, texture, film build, and substrate differences can make a correct code look different on a repair area.
For a visible touch-up beside older paint, a sample panel, an existing-part match, or a full-part repaint may be the better choice if appearance is critical.
How should I prep metal or an existing coating before using AMS-STD-595 37031?
Start with a clean, dry surface. Remove oil, grease, dust, and any loose coating or corrosion. On sound existing paint, scuff the surface so the new coating can bond. On bare metal or exposed substrate, use an appropriate primer before applying the topcoat.
Because substrate and condition affect adhesion and appearance, it is a good idea to test on the actual part before coating a larger area.
What documentation comes with AMS-STD-595 37031 paint, and what belongs to the color code itself?
The color code itself is only the reference for the color target. SDS, product data, and any chemistry-related documentation belong to the specific MyPerfectColor product or formula you order for AMS-STD-595 37031.
If you need documentation for a purchase, use the exact product ordered, since the color reference does not replace product-specific safety or technical information.
Which MyPerfectColor formats can I order for AMS-STD-595 37031?
MyPerfectColor can supply a match of AMS-STD-595 37031 in custom formats where offered, including spray paint and other touch-up options such as paint pens and brush-in-cap bottles.
The color code is the reference target, not a product line. Choose the format that fits your application method and the size of the repair or project.
