A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 35039 is a very dark charcoal tone with a slight cool blue cast and very low chroma. It reads close to black at a glance, but it is not a pure black, and the blue-gray undertone can become more visible as the light changes.
MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint made to this government color reference can be used on equipment panels, brackets, enclosures, cabinets, vents, hardware, speaker grilles, toolboxes, and other fabricated parts where a dark specification color is needed. In spray form, it is useful for touch-up work and for coating small components that need to visually align across metal, plastic, or previously painted parts.
Because this is a very dark color, surface condition and film build can be noticeable, especially with gloss or semi-gloss finishes. Chips, sanding marks, texture differences, and sheen variation may read more clearly than they would in a lighter color, and those differences can also make adjacent repairs stand out even when the color match is correct.
For new parts and specification-driven work, matching the code is usually the right starting point. For repairs next to weathered or sun-exposed coatings, the standard reference may not look exactly like the aged finish already on the part, so a sample panel or comparison to the existing surface may be useful before full production.

About US Government Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 Colors. Fed-Std-595C / FED STD 595 Colors
The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.
We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]
The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.
The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
1 = gloss
2 = semi gloss
3 = matt
The second digit indicates the color group;
0 = Brown 5 = Blue
1 = Red 6 = Grey
2 = Orange 7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
3 = Yellow 8 = Fluorescent
4 = Green
The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.
While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.
Frequently Asked Questions About Match of US Government™ AMS-STD-595 35039 *
What does AMS-STD-595 35039 specify when I order paint for this color?
A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 35039 is a color reference target, not a complete coating specification. When you order MyPerfectColor paint matched to this US Government color reference, you are selecting the color only.
The code does not by itself determine gloss, chemistry, surface preparation, corrosion protection, application method, or formal approval status. Choose the paint format and coating system based on the project requirements, not the color code alone.
Will AMS-STD-595 35039 match an older painted part exactly for touch-up?
Not always. Even if the color code is correct, an older coated part can have weathering, fading, sheen change, texture differences, or a different underlying coating that makes the repair area look different.
If you are touching up next to an in-service finish, a standard-code match to AMS-STD-595 35039 may be close enough for some jobs, but for large visible repairs or critical appearance work you may want to match the existing part or repaint the full surface.
If a drawing or procurement package calls for AMS-STD-595 35039, is the color code enough for acceptance?
Not always. AMS-STD-595 35039 tells you the color reference, but project acceptance can also depend on a sample panel, an existing-part match, a defined coating system, or approval from the engineering or procurement authority.
If the work is inspection-critical or the package asks for submittals before paint is approved, confirm those requirements before ordering. A standard color match and project acceptance are separate issues.
What product formats can I order for AMS-STD-595 35039?
MyPerfectColor can supply a custom match to AMS-STD-595 35039 in product formats such as spray paint and other available options, depending on the product listing for this color.
Common formats may include touch-up paint, paint pens, and brush-in-cap bottles where offered. Use the format that fits the part size, access, and repair method you need.
Is AMS-STD-595 35039 enough to choose the right paint for interior or exterior service?
No. AMS-STD-595 35039 defines the color target, but it does not tell you which coating chemistry or durability level is right for the environment.
For interior use, exterior exposure, abrasion, chemicals, or special substrate needs, choose the product system based on service conditions and project specs. The color match is one part of the order, not the whole performance requirement.
