A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 35041 is a very dark charcoal gray with a cool cast and a slight blue-violet lean. It is low-chroma and subdued, so it reads closer to a muted technical gray than to a warm neutral or black.
MyPerfectColor custom spray paint matched to this government color reference can be used on panels, brackets, enclosures, housings, carts, railings, tool supports, and other fabricated parts where a specific standard is called out. It is also a practical choice for touch-up work, repainting, mock-ups, training aids, and color-coded components across metal, plastic, or composite surfaces.
Because the color is very dark, substrate condition and finish can matter. Scratches, edge prep, sanding marks, and film-build variation may be easier to see than they would be in a lighter gray. On older in-service parts, a standard-reference match can still differ from weathered surrounding paint if the existing coating has faded, polished, or changed sheen, so an existing-part match or project-specific approval may be needed when appearance is critical.

About US Government Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 Colors. Fed-Std-595C / FED STD 595 Colors
The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.
We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]
The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.
The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
1 = gloss
2 = semi gloss
3 = matt
The second digit indicates the color group;
0 = Brown 5 = Blue
1 = Red 6 = Grey
2 = Orange 7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
3 = Yellow 8 = Fluorescent
4 = Green
The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.
While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.
Frequently Asked Questions About Match of US Government™ AMS-STD-595 35041 *
Does AMS-STD-595 35041 define the full coating system, or only the color target?
A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 35041 is a government color reference target. It tells you which color to match, but it does not by itself specify the coating chemistry, gloss, surface preparation, corrosion system, or formal approval status.
MyPerfectColor supplies custom-matched paint made to match the selected government color reference. If your project also requires a specific product type or coating system, confirm that requirement separately before ordering.
Will AMS-STD-595 35041 match an older in-service finish for touch-up work?
Not always. A correct match to AMS-STD-595 35041 can still look different next to an older coating that has weathered, faded, changed sheen, or built up a different texture.
For repairs beside an existing part, the standard color chip may not be the best reference if visual continuity is critical. In those cases, matching the existing part or repainting the full part is often the safer choice.
If my job calls for approval on AMS-STD-595 35041, is the standard match enough?
Not always. A standard color match to AMS-STD-595 35041 may be only one part of the requirement.
If the procurement package, engineering authority, or acceptance process requires a sample panel, existing-part match, or specific approval step, follow that requirement instead of relying on the color code alone. Color match and project acceptance are separate issues.
Should I double-check my order for MyPerfectColor AMS-STD-595 35041 before buying?
Yes. Because this is a custom-matched paint order, confirm the exact government color code, product type, finish, and quantity before checkout.
If you are ordering for a specification-driven project, the safest approach is to verify the reference, the format you need, and whether the project expects a standard match or a different approved sample. Custom color orders are made to order, so mistakes are harder to correct after purchase.
How do I reorder AMS-STD-595 35041 to keep repeat parts consistent?
Reorder by the exact code, AMS-STD-595 35041, and keep the product type and finish the same on every part you want to match.
Even with the same color reference, the final appearance can still shift based on substrate, surface preparation, film build, and application method. For the best consistency, keep those variables as close as possible from one order to the next.
