A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 37033 is a very dark gray with a near-neutral base and only a slight cool bias. With an LRV of 4.55 and very low chroma, it reads muted rather than colorful, and can look close to charcoal while staying softer than a pure black.
This is a MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint made to the selected government color reference. The code identifies the color target, but it does not define coating chemistry, gloss level, surface preparation, or approval status, so the applied result can still vary with the system and finish you choose.
It is commonly used for touch-up or repaint work on panels, brackets, housings, enclosures, cabinets, switch covers, rails, speaker grilles, carts, and fabricated metal parts where a dark, subdued government-standard color is needed. It also fits mock-ups, prototype hardware, training equipment, and color-coded accessories that need to stay close to the specified reference across metal, plastic, composite, or previously coated parts.
Because this is a dark, low-chroma color, surface texture, gloss, and substrate preparation can change how deep or gray it appears after spraying. Dark colors can also make sanding marks, waves, and film-build differences more visible, and touch-up beside aged coatings may show sheen or weathering differences even when the code match is correct. For acceptance-critical work, compare the finish against the actual part rather than relying on the code alone.

About US Government Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 Colors. Fed-Std-595C / FED STD 595 Colors
The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.
We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]
The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.
The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
1 = gloss
2 = semi gloss
3 = matt
The second digit indicates the color group;
0 = Brown 5 = Blue
1 = Red 6 = Grey
2 = Orange 7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
3 = Yellow 8 = Fluorescent
4 = Green
The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.
While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.
Frequently Asked Questions About Match of US Government™ AMS-STD-595 37033 *
What does AMS-STD-595 37033 mean when I order paint, and what does it not define?
A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 37033 is a government color reference target. It tells you which color to match, but it does not by itself choose the coating chemistry, gloss level, surface prep, corrosion protection, or any formal approval status. If your project needs a specific coating system or acceptance process, you still need to confirm those requirements separately.
Can MyPerfectColor paint matched to AMS-STD-595 37033 be used for touch-up on an existing finish?
Yes, but a correct match to AMS-STD-595 37033 does not always mean an invisible repair next to an aged coating. Weathering, fade, sheen changes, texture, and differences in the old paint can make the repaired area stand out. For critical repairs, a full-part repaint or a match to the existing part may be the better choice than matching the standard chip alone.
What product formats are available for AMS-STD-595 37033?
MyPerfectColor can supply a custom match of AMS-STD-595 37033 in spray paint and other formats where offered, such as touch-up paint or paint pens. The color code is the reference target, and the format should be chosen based on how you plan to apply the paint, the size of the repair, and whether you need fine touch-up or broader coverage.
Will the finish affect how AMS-STD-595 37033 looks after application?
Yes. The code defines the color reference, but gloss, matte, satin, texture, and film build can all change how AMS-STD-595 37033 appears on the finished part. If your project must match an existing sheen or surface texture, make sure the finish requirement is part of the order decision and not just the color code.
How should I prep metal or an existing coating before using paint matched to AMS-STD-595 37033?
Start by cleaning and degreasing the surface, then scuff sand or abrade it as appropriate so the coating can bond well. If there is corrosion, remove it before painting, and use a primer when the substrate or project requires it. For mixed substrates or unknown existing coatings, test the paint on the actual part before committing to a larger application of AMS-STD-595 37033.
