A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 20150 reads as a muted, medium-dark brown with a warm yellow-olive cast. It is not a clean red brown; the low chroma keeps it subdued, and the low LRV gives it a fairly deep appearance once applied. On textured or flatter surfaces, the color can read a little earthier and less saturated.
For specification work, MyPerfectColor custom spray paint matched to this government color reference can be used when a drawing, maintenance record, or procurement document calls out the code. It gives you a practical way to match the selected AMS-STD-595 target without implying an official government coating system or approval.
This color is well suited to spray-painted brackets, enclosures, housings, panels, support hardware, tool carts, and fabricated parts that need to stay visually aligned to the specified standard. It can also be used on switch covers, vents, rails, cabinet hardware, speaker grilles, and other small metal or plastic components where a subdued brown tone is required.
Because the color is relatively dark and moderately low in chroma, substrate color and finish can affect the final result. Dark or uneven bases may show through more readily than with a lighter color, and gloss will make surface texture, film build, and sheen variation more noticeable. For acceptance-critical or adjacency-sensitive work, compare against the existing part or a sample panel, since aging and gloss loss can make an in-service coating look different from the standard reference even when the code is correct.

The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.
We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]
The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.
The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
1 = gloss
2 = semi gloss
3 = matt
The second digit indicates the color group;
0 = Brown 5 = Blue
1 = Red 6 = Grey
2 = Orange 7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
3 = Yellow 8 = Fluorescent
4 = Green
The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.
While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.
A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 20150 is a government color reference target. It tells you the intended color, but it does not by itself define chemistry, gloss, surface preparation, corrosion protection, application method, or formal approval status. MyPerfectColor supplies paint matched to the selected government color reference, but you still need to choose the product format and finish that fit the job.
Not always. Even when AMS-STD-595 20150 is the correct color code, an older in-service coating can look different because of weathering, fade, sheen, texture, film build, and the prior coating system. For a visible repair beside an aged finish, a sample panel or an existing-part match may be a better choice than relying on the standard color code alone.
MyPerfectColor can supply AMS-STD-595 20150 in product formats used for specification-driven color work, including spray paint and other available touch-up options. The color code is the reference target, and the best format depends on the part, the area to be coated, and how the paint will be applied.
Reorder using the exact AMS-STD-595 20150 code, the same product type, and the same finish from the original order whenever possible. Consistency also depends on substrate, preparation, spray technique, film build, and cure conditions, so try to keep those variables the same across parts and repeat orders.
Dry-to-touch, recoat time, and full cure are different milestones for AMS-STD-595 20150. The correct timing depends on the specific MyPerfectColor product format, the substrate, temperature, humidity, and film thickness. Follow the instructions for the exact product you ordered rather than planning from the color code alone.
MyPerfectColor uses an acrylic enamel which is a fast-drying durable coating suitable for interior or exterior use.
