A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 20095 reads as a muted, low-reflectance brown with a warm yellow-olive undertone. It sits in an earthy range rather than a clean tan or a deep chocolate, and the low chroma keeps the color subdued.
MyPerfectColor custom-matched spray paint in this government standard reference is suited to equipment panels, enclosures, brackets, cabinets, support hardware, and fabricated parts where a known color code is the target. It can also be used on vents, switch covers, rails, fixtures, carts, or prototype pieces when multiple components need to share the same specified look across metal, plastic, or previously coated surfaces.
Because the color is fairly dark and restrained, finish and surface texture can change how it reads after application. A smoother gloss finish may make the warm undertone and any substrate variation more noticeable, while rough or porous surfaces can soften the appearance slightly. On mixed-material assemblies, the same color may look different from part to part if the coating build or sheen changes.
If you are matching an existing part, remember that an aged coating can look different from the standard reference even when the code is correct. Wear, weathering, and sheen loss may shift the surface toward a browner, grayer, or flatter appearance, so acceptance-critical work is often best checked against the actual part or project sample rather than the code alone.

The Federal Standard (now Aerospace Material Specification / AMS) 595 colors are used to specify colors for US Government applications. The color are used by the US Government agencies, branches and suppliers. The most common requests we receive for Fed Standard Colors are for spray paint, Direct to Metal and other paints for prototyping, marking and identification and touchup applications. Typical clients include the USCG, all branches of the Armed Services, the State Department, Lockheed Martin and Boeing. For example, we provided paint to the Navy for marking shells with the specific Fed Std color designated to identify the type of round.
We offer 5 standard sheens in our lacquer touchup paint: flat, low lustre, satin, semi-gloss or gloss. We also offer a full range of Alkyd and Acrylic Direct To Metal paints. Please contact us if you have any questions. Please submit RFQs to [email protected]
The colors in the Federal Standard set have no official names and are identified by five-digits. The numbers designate the sheen, color classification and color intensity.
The first digit will be 1,2 or 3 and indicates the level of sheen:
1 = gloss
2 = semi gloss
3 = matt
The second digit indicates the color group;
0 = Brown 5 = Blue
1 = Red 6 = Grey
2 = Orange 7 = Other (white, black, violet, metallic)
3 = Yellow 8 = Fluorescent
4 = Green
The third to fifth digits indicate the intensity. Lower numbers indicates a darker color and higher numbers indicate a lighter color.
While the Fed Std colors indicate sheen as part of the 5 digits, MyPerfectColor still requires you to enter a specific sheen. For example, the color Fed Std 37038 technically refers to a matte finish, but MyPerfectColor offers it in any sheen.
A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 20095 is a color reference target, not a complete coating specification. MyPerfectColor supplies paint matched to the selected government color standard, but the code itself does not determine chemistry, gloss, surface preparation, corrosion performance, or project approval status. If your job depends on a specific coating system, those requirements still need to be specified separately.
Not always. A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 20095 is the reference target, but an in-service part can look different because of weathering, fade, sheen change, texture, film build, or the original coating system. If you are repairing beside an aged finish, a standard-code match may not be the best choice. For the lowest risk, compare against the existing part or consider repainting the full part instead of only the repaired area.
A match of US Government AMS-STD-595 20095 can be ordered as MyPerfectColor custom-matched paint, with formats such as spray paint and other touch-up options available where offered on the product page. The color code is the reference target, while the format should be chosen based on how you plan to apply the paint, how much area you need to cover, and whether the repair is a small touch-up or a larger repaint.
If the procurement package, engineering authority, or inspection process requires more than a standard color-code match, AMS-STD-595 20095 alone may not be enough. That is especially true for acceptance-critical work, project-controlled finishes, or repairs next to an existing coated part. In those cases, ask whether a sample panel, project-specific approval, or match to the existing part is required before ordering.
Review the exact color code, product type, finish, and quantity before you buy. Custom-made color matches for AMS-STD-595 20095 should be checked carefully because they are not returnable or refundable. If you are unsure whether you need a spray can, touch-up format, or another product type, confirm that first so you do not order the wrong format for the job.
