Pantone™ PMS 2221 U

PMS 2221 U is a Pantone reference color, not a material-specific formula. When applied to different substrates like metal, plastic, or wood, the appearance can change due to surface texture, absorption, and reflectivity.

Smoother or more reflective materials often make PMS 2221 U appear darker or more saturated, while porous or textured surfaces can mute the color. For multi-material projects, evaluate PMS 2221 U on each actual substrate used in the final build to confirm it meets brand expectations.

Yes. For projects requiring brand or stakeholder signoff, ordering a physical sample of PMS 2221 U is recommended before committing to a full run.

Review the sample on the real substrate and under the lighting where it will be installed. This helps approval teams evaluate coverage, uniformity, and overall appearance, reducing the risk of rework or rejected builds.

Pantone books are printed reference standards, typically on paper with a specific finish. PMS 2221 U in paint form may not look identical due to differences in sheen, film thickness, and substrate.

Use the Pantone book as a color target, not a guarantee of identical appearance. For accurate expectations, compare a painted sample of PMS 2221 U directly against the book under similar lighting, then prioritize how it looks on the final material.

When PMS 2221 U is applied across large surfaces, consistency becomes critical. Plan for even coverage by using the same application method, maintaining consistent coat thickness, and allowing proper drying between coats.

More saturated Pantone colors like PMS 2221 U may require additional coats to achieve uniform appearance and hide. Test the full application process on a sample area to confirm results before completing the entire surface.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

The 11oz spray will cover about 20 square feet per coat. Keep in mind that it is difficult to gauge how much spray you'll need as it is highly dependent on how it is applied. It is better to have too much than run short.

We've found that every paint company offers its own unique selection of colors and rarely does a color have an exact equivalent in another company's color collection, especially for a color collection like Pantone which is designed for bright colors and inks.
