PMS 647 U is a Pantone PMS color commonly specified for brand systems that need a dark blue with visual weight and control. The overall impression is formal, subdued, authoritative, and stable, with a muted character rather than a vivid or energetic feel.

The color appears very dark, with an LRV of 8.5. It reads as cool with moderate saturation and a subtle gray undertone that helps reduce glare and contrast.

PMS 647 U works well in branding, display, and environmental elements where a dark blue must remain controlled under varied lighting. Because of its low lightness, careful surface preparation and even application can help avoid patchiness, especially on porous or high-contrast substrates.

Similar colors:

Pantone 646 U: slightly lighter and less visually dense, with a softer overall presence.
Pantone 648 U: darker and more neutral, with reduced blue clarity.
Pantone 653 U: cooler and more chromatic, with a cleaner blue impression.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 647 U

Why is Pantone PMS 647 U not recommended for touch-up or repair on existing finishes?

Pantone PMS 647 U is a color reference, not a coating specification. It does not define sheen, film build, substrate, or application method, all of which strongly affect how a color appears once applied.

Because of these variables, a Pantone match cannot reliably blend into an existing painted surface, even if the color name is the same. Small differences in sheen, aging, or substrate will be visible. Pantone PMS colors are best used when PMS 647 U is the visual target for a new, complete application rather than a partial touch-up.

What is the typical production lead time for paint matched to Pantone PMS 647 U?

Paint matched to Pantone PMS 647 U is made to order. Production time depends on the paint type, finish, and current production volume.

In most cases, standard lead times begin after the order is placed and specifications are confirmed. Larger quantities or specialty coatings may take longer. Shipping time is separate from production time and varies by destination.

Is Pantone PMS 647 U appropriate for signage, displays, or exhibit fabrication?

Yes. Pantone PMS 647 U is commonly used as a brand color target for signs, displays, and exhibit components where visual consistency is required across vendors.

For best results, the color should be evaluated on the actual substrate and finish used in the project. Sheen, material, and lighting can change how PMS 647 U is perceived, so sampling is recommended for high-visibility or brand-critical applications.

How do I order paint matched to Pantone PMS 647 U on MyPerfectColor?

Start by selecting the paint format that fits your project, such as spray paint or another available coating type. Then choose the desired sheen and quantity.

Confirm that Pantone PMS 647 U is the correct color reference for your application and that a standard Pantone match meets your acceptance requirements. Once specifications are set, place the order. The paint will be produced to match the Pantone reference under standard matching conditions.

How quickly will I receive my paint matched to Pantone PMS 647 U?
All paint is custom-made to order. While most orders ship within 48 hours, the lead-time for paint made to match Pantone PMS 647 U depends on the type of paint needed. Interior and exterior house paints usually ship within 1 to 3 business days, while custom spray paint typically takes 3-5 business days to ship. The transit time depends on your location and the shipping method you choose. If your need is immediate, select Expedited Production during checkout. Most expedited production orders ship within 24 hours on business days. Please contact MyPerfectColor if you are concerned about a specific deadline. We do our best to make sure you get your paint on time. Learn more about paint lead times at MyPerfectColor.
Can I use the Pantone PMS 647 U for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.
