PMS 660 U is a Pantone PMS color defined as a visual communication standard rather than a paint formula. It presents a dark, cool blue-violet appearance with an authoritative, high-contrast character commonly used in brand-facing environments.

The color appears dark with an LRV of 14.55 and reads as distinctly cool. It is highly saturated and visually dense, with a subtle violet undertone that becomes more noticeable under neutral or balanced lighting conditions.

PMS 660 U is often specified for brand identity elements, signage, exhibit components, and prototypes where a deep blue-violet is part of the visual system. Its use is typically driven by brand standards rather than decorative preference.

This color performs best on well-prepared surfaces where uniform film build can be achieved. Due to its depth and saturation, additional coats may be needed for consistent coverage, and finish selection can significantly influence perceived color balance between blue and violet.

Similar colors:

PMS 659 U: slightly lighter and more open, with a clearer blue emphasis.
PMS 661 U: darker and heavier, with reduced violet clarity.
PMS 2747 U: more muted and neutral, with less saturation and visual intensity.

Frequently Asked Questions About Pantone™ PMS 660 U

How will different finishes change the appearance of Pantone PMS 660 U?

Pantone PMS 660 U is a visual color target, not a finish specification. Gloss, satin, and matte finishes can make the same color appear different once applied.

Glossier finishes typically look darker and more saturated because they reflect more light directly. Matte finishes scatter light, which can make PMS 660 U appear lighter or slightly less vivid. Satin finishes usually fall between these two.

If brand appearance is critical, choose the finish first and evaluate the color in that finish rather than assuming all sheens will look the same.

When should I request a sample of Pantone PMS 660 U before ordering full quantities?

Sampling PMS 660 U is recommended for high-visibility brand projects, large installations, or any work that requires formal brand approval.

It is especially important to sample if the color will be viewed under specific lighting, applied at scale, or used across multiple components. A sample lets you confirm brightness, saturation, and overall visual impact before committing to production.

Sampling helps reduce brand risk when visual accuracy matters more than speed.

Why can Pantone PMS 660 U look different on different materials?

Pantone PMS 660 U can appear different depending on the substrate it is applied to. Material properties like absorption, texture, and reflectivity all influence how the color is perceived.

For example, the same color may look deeper on smooth, non-porous surfaces and lighter or less saturated on textured or absorbent materials.

For multi-material builds, it is best to evaluate PMS 660 U on each actual substrate to ensure acceptable visual alignment.

What should I consider when applying Pantone PMS 660 U to metal or powder-coated parts?

When applying PMS 660 U to metal or existing powder-coated parts, surface preparation and the existing coating can affect the final appearance.

Differences in gloss level, surface texture, and underlying color may cause visual shifts compared to other materials. Even with proper cleaning and scuffing, the color can look different than expected.

For brand-facing components, producing and reviewing a sample on the actual metal part is the safest way to confirm visual results.

Can I use the Pantone PMS 660 U for touch up?

Unfortunately, no.

Some manufacturers specify Pantone colors as touch up for their products, but Pantone does not work well as a proxy for a touch-up solution (for a litany of reasons such as it doesn't include sheen and Pantone color tolerances are not tight enough for touch up). When we match Pantone colors we are matching to a swatch in a Pantone book - not to your product.

The only way we can provide a touch-up solution for your product is for you send us a part. We would use the part to create a touch-up grade match. Unfortunately, there isn't an effective way to 'spec' the color well enough to produce a touch up without the part.

Most people don't use a primer for a touch up paint application, but a primer may improve adhesion and is typically recommended for exterior applications.
How do I convert PMS 660 U to a different color from another paint company?

While MyPerfectColor can provide PMS 660 U in paint, we don't provide any crossover information.
